I build, rather than buy, my PCs because it's more fun, I can get better components for the price (this applies to mid-range, rather than extreme low end), and I know the source and quality of all the components. When you buy a pre-built computer, it's hard to know exactly what you're getting in terms of chipset, upgradeability, RAM quality, form factor, etc.

Ram: 70 dollars, no rebate.
Hard drive: 75
Case 60 at least
Graphics card: 30
Motherboard: 75
Processor 85
Card reader 25
Dual layer rewritable DVD drive: 30
PSU: 30
Cost: 480. Don't forget shipping costs and waiting around. At the store prices are usually even higher than newegg.com. Only if you're building a computer designed for games does it actually make a difference. I am astonished at what a 400 dollar PC can do now a days. Lenovo has a good budget system here, great for doing office stuff or surfing the web.

if you externally back up your data and unplug it and put it in another room: your house can still catch fire.
if someone activates Goldeneye, a satellite which triggers a nuclear pulse in the target area which destroys all electronic equipment: then you are really screwed.

It's all about how much redundancy you need, off-site backup is the usual status quo for businesses that depend on there data.
