Mitsubishi's 65-inch LaserVue HDTV undergoes further testing
It's one thing to witness an HDTV under the watchful eye of the company that made it, but it's an entirely different experience to get out on your own, with your own hand-picked sources, your own food stash and the freedom to really speak your mind. From what we've seen under Mitsu's own conditions, the 65-inch LaserVue is truly a sight to behold, and even when the gurus over at TheTechLounge managed to see this thing in their own element, they were equally amazed. They wouldn't go so far as to call it the best HDTV ever, but even when compared side-by-side with Pioneer's heralded PRO-151FD KURO plasma, they found the laser-packed set to be superior in a few instances. The test subjects underwent a few grueling hours of Iron Man and Ice Age: Meltdown on Blu-ray, and at the end of the night, critics didn't hesitate to recommend the set for anyone with loads of cash.

Further testing, done on a different website without the obvious bias, concludes that you can't wear this as a hat.

People, it's possible that the Panasonic's image areas that _appear_ washed out on our monitors do not actually look washed out in real life. The area could just be brighter and the camera capturing the image we're seeing couldn't capture the dynamic range properly so it looks washed out.
We can't make a judgment without seeing these TVs real life.
Johan S @ Oct 18th 2008 1:53PM
Oops, I meant Mitsubishi not Panasonic. duh.
b_rolin @ Oct 18th 2008 8:31AM
Um is it just me? From those pics the kuro STILL looks better..
martin @ Oct 18th 2008 8:43AM
I think you're actually getting more detail on the mitsu set, though I think its the fact that they used iron man thats throwing you off. He looks kinda s"softer" on the pioneer, and while that may look better in some instances its not as true to life (which I'm sure would be more apparent if we actually had a irl Iron man to compare to :) )
Im thinking of it as in video game graphics, sure some of the games have nice light bloom and soft shadeing, but in reality its there to mask the low points of the pixels themselves.
my 2 cents
Tinu @ Oct 18th 2008 12:44PM
Seems like the Mitsubishi TV is simply sharpening the picture. Reminds me of the "Unsharp Mask" filter in Photoshop. Don't most HDTVs have sharpness setting built in anyways? You can probably crank up Sharpness in Pioneer too I think.
Johan S @ Oct 18th 2008 1:56PM
Nobody can judge this tv without seeing it in real life unless they have a better monitor and know that the camera taking the pic captured the dynamic range etc. properly.
Dave Chappelle @ Oct 18th 2008 10:39PM
ye sorry to burst your bubble DONALD! but it is just you lol.
why dont we see the new Sony 240Hz XBR's against the Mitsubishi? that would be the best comparison imo.
jason @ Oct 18th 2008 8:35AM
The kuro looks better. The laservue makes everything look in focus which is unnatural and causes the eyes confusion as to what they are supposed to be focusing on. Also ironman's suit looks better on the kuro.
allislost @ Oct 18th 2008 9:03AM
What? there's more detail on the LaserVue and The Kuro add some blur to everything.
j_g_puff @ Oct 18th 2008 9:09AM
Jason, it's better to have the ability to display faithfully - you then have the choice of adding blur or softness if desired. If the display is incapable of sharp reproduction, you're stuck with softness whether you like it or not.
AlekZander @ Oct 18th 2008 9:52AM
I agree with Jason, the light areas on the Kuro are much less washed out.
jason @ Oct 18th 2008 2:25PM
tsk tsk jason, adding shame to our name once again.
iEye @ Oct 18th 2008 8:39AM
LaserVue hurts my iEyes, the Kuro looks better...
everything in the LaserVue is just too bright and the pixels look artificially sharpened...
Samboini @ Oct 18th 2008 10:37AM
iEye, your comment is rather moot considering you don't buy anything without an Apple logo on it.
shimmy shimmy yah @ Oct 19th 2008 12:02AM
will you be taking the apple cinema display instead ieye? lol
koner @ Oct 18th 2008 8:40AM
@b_rolin
unless you are blind you can clearly see that the details on Mitsu's picture is twice than those in kuro
Colin Potter @ Oct 18th 2008 8:47AM
"Twice than?"
Is that even english?
Samboini @ Oct 18th 2008 9:38AM
English isn't everyone's first language Colin, you ignorant shit.
philippe @ Oct 19th 2008 9:59AM
In your own words Collin: "more intelligence please. thanks."
Purple Haze @ Oct 21st 2008 9:14AM
A TV can't magically can add detail to a pre-defined source, the Mitsu is just having some unnatural filters during playback compared to the Pio (or another tech ;)). Or the Pio removes half of the detail, which I find extremely unlikely.
Clearly one would need to see these two beasts side-by-side with identical Blu-ray players and cables to get an opinion of which one's the best. Too bad the pictures provided are so small and of such poor quality.
Here's a snapshot from the Blu-ray of the Iron Man scene in question (2,75M PNG): http://www.imagebam.com/image/75a41916342276
Down @ Oct 18th 2008 8:52AM
The Mitsubishi one looks clearer and is better on the eyes, in my opinion.
Samboini @ Oct 18th 2008 9:38AM
Agreed; although i'd be happy with either set!
iKurt @ Oct 18th 2008 12:00PM
Just wait until you see the appearance of noise and artifacts as a result of the image enhancements....
Stephen @ Oct 18th 2008 9:00AM
Mitsu LaserVue, looks amazing. I'm glad I havn't bought any HD-Player yet =]
Patriks7 @ Oct 18th 2008 9:04AM
Is IronMan the Crysis of movies?
Boo Radley @ Oct 18th 2008 9:58AM
Awwww. I just came to call them out on being stupid too. Even if they didn't know who made it anyone with a brain should know it's not Pixar. Especially from the big Fox logo at the beginning.
Miken @ Oct 18th 2008 9:09AM
The Mits looks sharper and has better shadow detail. Pioneers are known to sacrifice shadow detail for blacker blacks right?
Also, Ice Age 2 is NOT a Pixar movie, it's a Blue Sky movie.
Evan @ Oct 18th 2008 9:28AM
Color Temperature.
Some Kid @ Oct 18th 2008 10:07AM
If you beat the KURO, do you really need further testing?
CraigJ @ Oct 18th 2008 10:21AM
So, who's the idiot that thinks Ice Age is a Pixar movie?
Alex Padilla @ Oct 18th 2008 10:40AM
Wow, 7k for a TV. But, that TV apparently renders images that look real. Boy, I wish Iron Man was real...
Mr. Fingers @ Oct 18th 2008 10:59AM
I've seen the laservue in person set up on bluray next to a Pioneer Kuro and a diamond vision Mitsu DLP
and the laservue blew both of them away. It wasn't even a contest between the three.
Now the 7K price tag is a killer and my wife pointed out for another 6K you could actually buy
a brand new Mitsubishi car instead of the TV and drive myself to the sports bar and watch TV there.
Skyride @ Oct 18th 2008 11:13AM
Can I point out, how the hell are you supposed ot compare it from pictures on your computer monitor? If that was a true comparison those images would both be identical. :\
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 18th 2008 11:28AM
http://gizmodo.com/5013722/sony-hosts-xbr8-led-lcd-vs-plasma-shootout-youll-never-guess-who-wins
'Apparently, these things can be juked'
Any demo you see from a company pushing their product should be assumed to be rigged INCLUDING ONES SHOWING KUROS WINNING.
It's just how marketing works.
Tyson @ Oct 18th 2008 12:13PM
call me crazy but the Kuro looks to have deeper less whited out colors to me at least in the Ironman picture
Peter @ Oct 18th 2008 12:56PM
i cant tell the difference becuz my 13 yr old crt monitor sucks!
pete @ Oct 18th 2008 2:52PM
the mitsubishi may be more washed out in the building, but the sky is deffinetely a lot better than the sky in the KURO. its also true that it looks like the just bumped up the sharpening because the depth of field is all out of wack.
paul34 @ Oct 18th 2008 2:59PM
Wow, some of you really make me shake my head.
Some of you guys honestly expect to be able to judge a display by lookng at through your (most likely inferior) display, plus the additional layer of a camera that we don't know the settings of?
Do you think a good way to scan a picture is by taking a cameraphone pic of a printed picture, too?
b00N @ Oct 18th 2008 4:41PM
Are they stupid at the thetechlounge? They alway refer to the Laser-TV as a DLP-TV! Suprisingly they don't compare the Laser-TV with "other Cars"...
pcgeek @ Oct 18th 2008 5:33PM
The Laser IS a DLP, just with a laser light engine instead of the traditional bulb and wheel filter.
disturbiad @ Oct 18th 2008 10:15PM
it seems that all the laservue does is focus on everything unfocused. wheather this is a good thing or not is your decision
b00n @ Oct 18th 2008 6:59PM
Oh, I thought this would do some scanline again. And I guess it is a 1-Chip-DLP and Multiplexing is done with the Laser? You know at which rate [Hz] the Multiplexing is done? This shouldn't be named Laser (as there seems to be no Ray) but LED-Lightbulb then...
Iridium @ Oct 18th 2008 7:59PM
weren't laservue sets supposed to be cheaper than the sell your first born to get one Kuros.
For $7k I'll pass when you can buy a very good 60" Samsung for $2200 right now. The picture may be good but is it $5k better?
If Mitsu ever cares about selling more than a few thousand of these things, they need to drop to the $2k level by christmas.
Mike @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:32PM
Both, without having seen either in person, are surely sweet sets! I would be happy if I were to be given either one. I am going to still be happy when I buy the mitsu and play cod or unreal....oh soooooo sweeeeeeeet it will be!!! Now I just need to break the news to my wife...haha
