Samsung's i907 Epix filtering into AT&T stores
We've gotten a number of reports today that the Samsung i907 Epix is turning up in sundry AT&T stores across the lands, and those claims are certainly backed up by a fresh retail unboxing of Sammy's WinMo 6.1 Professional monster for AT&T that's turned up over on Boy Genius Report. "Monster" is the right word here, too, in light of Mr. Genius' claims that the Epix seems to be just about the thickest device offered by the carrier outside the beastly Tilt -- not the news we wanted to hear about a QWERTY handset that looks from a distance to be no more imposing than a BlackJack. The optical mouse is cool, don't get us wrong, but is it cool enough to justify a conspicuous bulge in our pocket?

It looks to be the same thinkness to the first Blackjack with the extended battery, which isn't bad at all. Actually, I prefer the extended battery shape since it gives the phone extra weight to it, and it fits perfectly fine in a jeans pocket.

Funny how Samsung puts out the thinnest & nearly thickest devices (Nokia probably wins on thickness front. I will never forget the N91's crazyness). I wonder if the design groups are at odds & this is their passive aggressive method of displaying that.
Anthony @ Oct 20th 2008 8:09PM
"Oh, it's EPIC alright.. Wait, you're talking about the phone? No. I'm just happy to see you.."
Josh G @ Oct 20th 2008 8:12PM
If this is based on the i780, then it's 12.9mm thick.
If that's thick, well no wonder girls these days have self esteem issues!
Jonathan @ Oct 20th 2008 8:56PM
ATT Tilt - 19 mm thick
Apple iPhone - 11.6 mm thick
Samsung i907 Epix - 12.9 mm thick
It's a brick eh?
hwoarang27 @ Oct 20th 2008 8:43PM
OMG why does every GOOD phone gotta be ATT?
WHYYYYY

I NEED a QWERDY phone!
NDogg78 @ Oct 20th 2008 8:59PM
it's cause most of the world is GSM, and ATT is the only one of two choices for GSM in the US that has a decent 3G network
Michael @ Oct 20th 2008 8:55PM
Switch Providers?
jupiterthunder @ Oct 20th 2008 9:02PM
Good luck with the QWER_D_Y phone.
Gavin @ Oct 20th 2008 9:04PM

a ham sandwich @ Oct 20th 2008 9:14PM
@jupiter
yeah really! you could just swipe your finger across the top row of keys and get it right!
qwerty...see?!
Jon Nelson @ Oct 20th 2008 9:30PM
I rofl'd at the "qwerdy" part.
Although, I must admit that I too have (somehow) screwed up spelling qwerty before.
...but nothing like that.
jupiterthunder @ Oct 20th 2008 9:03PM
Did I miss the i900 arriving in the US?
omoks @ Oct 20th 2008 9:13PM
What about the Omnia?
Jake @ Oct 20th 2008 10:11PM
You guys realize its touchscreen right? on top of the mouse feature, I played with it today, lotta fun
kozoto @ Oct 20th 2008 11:41PM
Yea I played with it too, the tactile feedback is awesome, and its not that beefy, just a tad bit longer and think of the thickness as a blackjack 2 if it had a extended battery like the first BJ did

Engadget should really sync their comments with engadgetMobile ..
I mentioned over @ engadgetmobile this:
Correction: This is AT&T's version of the Mirage .. the AT&T navigator installs the "Mirage" version and that is the internal codename @ AT&T. The Omnia, which the codename Mirage is mistaken with quite often, is a completely separate phone and I think someone didn't match the codenames correctly - because THIS device is the Mirage, not the i900.
I have no information as to when or if AT&T will be getting the Omnia / i900
This phone DOES have WiFi regardless of what the box says, I have it in my hands right now.
Included are the kickass mouse, GPS, Wifi, 3g (HSPA), microSD, windows 6.1 pro, a stylus .. and best of all - it's pretty much the same size, thickness as the Blackjack II.
Not quite sure why some are giving it a bunch of shit and calling it a brick, because this phone is hella nice.. and isn't That big for a phone - not to mention a phone that does all the functions of a Tilt and then some.
I should also mention I work for AT&T.

I have the Blackjack 2, and this one is similar. I love the Blackjack form factor. Is it thinner than the HTC 8525? Even if it's a little chunky, as long as it's not as thick as the 8525, I'm in.
kevin @ Oct 21st 2008 3:10AM
looks like it's available on-line...

I should have mentioned that I thought on the box in that picture over at BG, it looked THICKER than the Blackjack 2, but then I'm looking at pictures.
Mobile Phone Diva @ Oct 21st 2008 6:52AM
This was a reply to Joe who said he has one and works for AT&T. Engadget's reply system is still a little screwed up,
Mack Swift @ Oct 21st 2008 8:39AM
It's on the ATT online store now. $100 on a 2yr contract and rebates.

Actually, I just bought a Blackjack II a few weeks back when my poor trusty old Razr met with a nasty deadly accident. I bought the Blackjack II coz I liked my friend's, and it fit nicely in a particular place on our scooters and wheelchairs. (she and I are both handicapped)
I liked it; it was okay. But two nights ago, when looking to upgrade hubby's old Razr, this Epix had just come into the store a few hours before we arrived. They hadn't even got it out on display yet. They showed it to us.
So, I gave hubby my Blackjack II.
And I bought the new Epix!
The Epix is really great; I love the touch screen, optical mouse, and the size isn't too bad. Yeah, it's a *whole lot* bigger than my old Razr... but it does so much more also. It makes the need for a PDA obsolete. Given that - it's not that much extra size in a handbag, looking at it that way.
Now - if I can only figure out a good way to keep it on my person regardless of whether the clothes I'm wearing that day have pockets.
See, if I meet with an accident and tip my scooter or chair, or get knocked out by a careless driver -- I have no way to call for help if my phone isn't on my body. I can't get up and walk to a curb or to safety.
The blackjack had a small attachement hole at one corner where I could hang it on a lanyard around my neck. But the Epix dosen't... and it's mighty big to hang on my neck anyhow!
Tina @ Oct 26th 2008 10:36AM
This phone is awesome.... It is not much BIGGER than the BJ2 in size and the touch screen part of it is really nice.....
I would buy it but it is tooo expensive to handle... I will just wait for AT&T to relase the BOLD!
