AMD rolls out budget-minded ATI Radeon HD 4830 graphics card

It's not quite a $39 graphics card but, at "less than $150," AMD's new ATI Radeon HD 4830 is still quite the bargain compared to ATI's higher-end offerings, and you'll get a good deal more oomph for those extra bucks. That includes a 256-bit GDDR3 memory interface (the actual amount of memory will vary from card to card), an impressive 640 stream processing units, AMD's second generation Unified Video Decoder for improved HD video playback, DirectX 10.1 support, two dual-link DVI ports, and, of course, support for ATI's CrossFireX technology. What's more, while AMD isn't willing to mention any specific prices below $150, The Tech Report has already turned up one card from MSI that's selling for just $120 after a $10 rebate and, if you're looking for a bit more information to inform your purchase, you can check out their review and benchmarks by hitting up the link below.

Under $150? I paid exactly $150 for my Diamond HD 4850, which is much more powerful.
htd @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:13PM
exactly, newegg has 4850 below $150 after rebate NOW, plus 4870 512M is around $200, I dont see any meaning for 4830 to be around $150 either.
Cornelius @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:05PM
MSRP and actual prices tend to vary. Right now, the MSRP on HD4850 is still $199, even though many retailers are selling them for under $150.
Newegg is already selling the 4830 at $130 ($115 after mail-in rebate):

that 115 MIR is stupid. Why does newegg and tigerdirect always have to pull those gimmicks. Are they hoping we bunch of dumb a** forget to mail the proof of purchase on time? I have had MIR money not received twice *MAD*
Cornelius @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:11PM
Statistically, yeah, some are that stupid. Many analysts estimate that only 50% of rebates are redeemed, allowing retailers to pocket the difference.
Honestly, I don't mind them actually... I have the extra cash on hand to wait a few weeks/months, and I always remember to redeem mine.. I consider MIR to be a lazy tax. It's like an extra bonus.
Cornelius @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:15PM
Btw... some companies don't honor MIR as well as others. I've always had MIR honored by ASUS (though they made me wait the longest for the rebate check), eVGA, and Logitech. Linksys, on the other hand, have somehow "lost" both rebate forms+UPCs I've sent them, so I now refuse to buy from them.

Would you be able to combine two, assuming your mother board could handle it? That seems like it would be a powerful set up.
Zane @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:55PM
Yep. From the article - "of course, support for ATI's CrossFireX technology". Two running in tandem would be a great budget setup.

Thanks for the help

finally...crysis ;]
life is good
Wwhat @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:37PM
Latest news is that they are doing something wrong and some of these cards turn out to have only 580 and in some cases 480 shaders activated, so don't get one even if you are silly enough to want one, they seem to be defective.
needs_a_laptop @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:31PM
Uh, sources? First I've heard of such defections.
sawtx @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:01PM
Supposedly those were older cards that were made before they decided on using 640 shaders, and all the new cards have the 640 shaders.

rony @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:42PM
should be around 75 to 80 bucks in a couple of months.... a couple in crossfire format would be a great budget config.... yup even crisis at low-medium settings
Will @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:36PM
My 8600 GT (256 MB) can run Crysis at medium/low settings just fine, and I've seen those for around $30.

Who is TechGlance and why is the engadget feed being spammed to the TWiT Army, Twitter, and Identi.ca?
bebop @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:54PM
And most importantly whose job is it to draw on all the electrolytic capacitors with a blue marker?
Cornelius @ Oct 23rd 2008 1:59PM
Probably the same person who tests them individually before they're soldered to the PCB.
Towncivilian @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:08PM
And why are there still a couple of electrolytic capacitors instead of the solid capacitors surrounding them?
Wwhat @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:41PM
Yeah it's quite a dedication to mark every damn of those millions of capacitors, I wonder if compulsive people get hired for that, although those probably could not NOT mark the bad ones I guess :)
Holger @ Oct 24th 2008 3:31AM
hehe was thinking the same thing... why the blue markers... (ofc it's probablt that it's passed a test)...
manual labor ftw!

why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:13PM
That cooler looks a bit loud for me. I bet the performance is good though. ATI is killing right now.
dotAaron @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:16PM
Its pointless lol
On popular and cheap UK store Ebuyer...
£99 = 4830
£115 = 4850
The price difference is too minimal :)
ZaxCG2 @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:28PM
Great. But this ATi card is = to what Nvidia card now? I'll stick to one brand thankyou.
sawtx @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:03PM
It looks like it is slightly better than the 9800GT.
Matthew Hilario @ Oct 23rd 2008 2:33PM
it's like carne asada fries, without the sour cream.
Dave @ Oct 23rd 2008 3:26PM
This comparison puts lit a little behind the 9800gt
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/msi9800gt/
Kiran @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:10PM
But will it play Crysis?
Wwhat @ Oct 23rd 2008 10:42PM
Nope, you still have to do that yourself.
rhavenn @ Oct 23rd 2008 4:40PM
Yeah, now they just need to provide some specs for it and push the radeonhd drivers, etc...so I can actually use one of these on a non-Windows / non-Linux system with 3d support.
Alan Partridge @ Oct 23rd 2008 6:46PM
How does the HD 4670 compare to this card?
iofthestorm @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:12PM
Significantly slower, this is probably around 50% or more faster. This has twice the shader processors albeit slower clock speeds, but the 640 SPs really make a difference.
Declan Nicholls @ Oct 23rd 2008 8:56PM
Interesting!!!
