Among them are...

1) Operating system. Making a Hackintosh still isn't something the average user is capable of doing, and OS X most definitely has its strengths. Namely, ease-of-use, little to no worrying about ad/spy/malware, stability (though Windows has come a long ways in this regard), etc.
2) Industrial design. Which I suppose is a more professional way of saying "sexiness", but some of it isn't just for looks. The MagSafe power connector and the magnetic latch, for example.
3) Customer support. Apple tops customer satisfaction surveys on a regular basis for a reason. Honestly, they're the best company I've ever dealt with over the phone.
4) Apple's pro applications - namely, Logic and Final Cut. Each is one of the best applications in their respective fields, and each is Mac-only. I may have switched to Windows if Logic wasn't so damned good.

A Mac netbook would easily be worth $699 to me because of the above factors. If they made a netbook, I'm confident that it would be one of the most well-designed and solid netbooks in existence.

That said, they're not perfect. Leaving out Firewire on the MacBook was an example of needlessly poor judgment. I could go on, but you get my point.

$ killall MacDefenseForce
$ shutdown -h now

Rollins

Comments on ASUS Eee PC S101 reviewed: sexy, but not worth the premium

Making a "hackintosh" is very easy using leo4all, a 10 year old could do it... no "apple tax" is diff NOT worth it.

tkid92

Comments on ASUS Eee PC S101 reviewed: sexy, but not worth the premium

I use a Mac because I like OS X more.

I enjoy the BSD UNIX part of os x, and all the open source projects. Yes, looks and build quality DO matter for god's sake. Did you ever think the main reason you don't have any manufacturing in US any longer is because most of you just keep looking at price, price, price? My grandfather used to say "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap stuff" and there's the other one "you get what you pay for". If I'm going to be using something for hours every day I will want to make damn sure it looks nice both to me and to most others - IN ADDITION to it doing its job AND lasting a long time. And to get that you need to pay the premium, surprise surprise. You can say what you want about Apple, but they take their industrial design very seriously. The hinge looks cheap, those circles around the screen look cheap, the keyboard looks cheap ... everything about this is "wannabe" premium. You can't just color something a bit better and make it slightly more attractive and suddenly call it fashionable.

More than that, though, design is more than just how something looks. Typing this from the new Aluminum MacBook, the way it looks from a purely aesthetic point of view is one of the smallest improvements. The way it feels is far more important.

Of course, there are always going to be tech-heads who are unable of comprehending the value of a computer outside of how much RAM or HDD space it has. There's nothing wrong with this; nobody is forcing them to appreciate Apple's -- or Sony's, or VooDoo's, or any other premium, fashionable, "lifestyle" or whateve you want to call it brand -- computers.

"Wouldnt every Apple laptop be paying for the looks not specs, you could buy another laptop thats got the same specs for half the price. But then you couldnt hump it cus it doesnt have an apple vagine on the outside,"

There is more to Apple than just looks. There is a feel to the computer. A computer is a machine that we will spend countless hours using; there is more importance based on it than just how big the numbers are!

I am a Mac user, but I force that on no one. Everyone should feel free to purchase whatever computing experience functions best for them. However, stop being so naive as to say that Apple's premium is just about aesthetics; there is more to design than looks, and there will always be a group of people willing to pay more for beauty and elegance. So just let it be and enjoy your Compaq or HP or Dell or whathaveyou. You've found your fit. Let people enjoy theirs.

Uncontrol
