I have been using Vista 32-bit (on my laptop) and 64-bit on my desktop on and off since the alpha stage and exclusively (well, sometimes I still use Mandriva just for fun ;-) since it went retail and I am VERY happy with it, especially since SP1.

I loved XP, but it was getting dated, and the way it handled RAM was horrendous, if you have 2GB of RAM, XP would try its darndest to free up as much as possible, which is just plain stupid. Why would I buy RAM that my OS isn't going to use? Now with Vista, it optimizes applications use of RAM, and uses pretty much ALL of the leftover stuff (that XP just to leave empty) for cache that make my computing experience MUCH more smooth, fast and enjoyable than on XP.

I keep my main computer on pretty much 24/7 and with XP, I accepted the fact htat after 3-4 days, it would require a restart in order to keep it fresh and prevent BSOD, freezes, etc, now I can leave my computer on, which is important as it is my media server as well, for weeks, sometimes over a month and when I use it, it's just like I just turned it on thanks to vista.

I'll admit, at the start, there were some issues, but these issues were mainly due to the lag between the release of a new OS and manufacturers releasing drivers for it. Now, even with 64-bit Vista that I have installed on many machines, I never have a problem with drivers or any problems with vista at all for that matter.

As for the 'refund or discount' for Vista owners....that's just ridiculous....that's like punishing a company for speeding up the development of new, potentially superior products. Nobody is going to force you to update to windows 7. They will still release new FREE updates for vista for many years to come. Most of the sales from MS' new OSes come from OEM manufacturers like Dell, HP, etc, so instead of having the price of Vista included, the price, which will likely be the same as Vista, of Windows 7 will be installed for those buying a new pre-built machine.

Nobody is forcing you to buy anything, so STFU and stop being a bitter pansy. thanks.

schmitty338

Comments on

wow...I really should have proof-read that post. Intel, the DOJ, and many others saying to Vista "thanks but no thanks" wasn't a fiasco, right?

Look, i never said that Vista wasn't better than XP or innovative. I might have used caps so you would see it though. All I say is that Vista did not delivered the cool stuff they were supposed to deliver (as a beta tester, i know what i'm talking about) like WinFS and some other stuff.

The press release (that's what i have the gripe with) basically says THE SAME as it did with Vista's press release, and you know what? Yes, they failed to deliver. Security wise, Vista is NOT the most secure OS that you can deploy in your Desktop (Go ask the many documents on the net, i'm sure you'll understand). Granted SP1 got somethings working but there are many others that still won't do as much as promised (contrast with "as much as expected" which obviously is completely subjective).

VISTA IS INNOVATIVE. Bitlocker, check, it's a plus. Eyecandy, check, a plus too (though not particularly friendly on many desktops but it looks nice), memory management, yeah a big plus, unless your motherboard is stupid and slows down when you have 4GB of RAM (non OS related though, nothing to blame to Vista). Accesibility? It's amazing how accessible Vista is, really. BUT the security holes are there, there are still reliability issues, and then you start to question at least the Marketing department at Microsoft.

Now they say (check the video linked down below in this thread) that the step from Vista to 7 is not so revolutionary as from XP to Vista (which is understandable given the time lapse between the two OSes), but there's something not quite right when they say that 7 will do just fine with the hardware that was able to run Vista (which means that if you had hardware trouble with Vista, you'll have it with 7 also). There's also that feeling on a customer's mind that you paid how much for a license (for each computer on your business for example)? Are you supposed to buy again 7 at Vista's price? There should be a DEEP DISCOUNT for those that bought Vista recently. More so now that we live in this bad economic times, wouldn't you agree?

Vista was a failure (maybe not so epic as ME but close). You and me might get it, and eventually end up buying it and loving it... But if the pricetag is too expensive, if deploying it has hidden costs (cloud stuff will be charged, mark my words), or if it will "feature" the same compatibility, security and reliability issues as Vista, then this is going to spell trouble for Microsoft.

Because no one is forcing me (or anybody for that matter) to buy Microsoft stuff. And if any of the other options available mature enough or go into the OS selling business then this would spell BIG trouble for Microsoft's marketshare.

STFU? Tsk, tsk, tsk. That's the koolaid talking... not you. How do i know it? You didn't address anything I said appart from Vista being an ethical fiasco. Let me recap it for you. "Press release, the same with Vista, will they deliver now? Is what they offer enough for you to cough up the money? Vista didn't work for a lot of people, your mileage may vary, my opinion: fiasco" ...

But relax, what do i know, right? Go ahead, make it all better calling me pansy... you'll feel better.

whiskey

Comments on

@whiskey

Hi. Just because MS has sold a lot of Vista licenses does not mean jack. Every OEM that is an MS partner ( that only leaves Apple ) is forced to sell the newest version of the OS because of contractual obligation. Right now if you chose to stick with XP you actually have to find a manufacturer that still has that program and you also have to pay extra. So by buying a new computer ( non apple ) you automatically raise the number of sold Vista licenses. Now tell me how does that make Vista a non fiasco? And YES someone IS forcing you to buy Vista!

Also XP does no such thing as clearing your RAM when you have a lot of it. On the contrary, every MS OS based on the NT kernel will use as much ram as it can when it needs it and that is by default. Sure there are a couple of files that get put on the hdd but I doubt that Vista is any different in that aspect.

It is true that Vista has the intent of speeding up your experience and could have been great but the hdd caching mechanism is somewhat broken ( ask Intel about that one ) and a lot of the *innovations* look great on paper and in the MS adds but in really don't quite measure up. The fact is that on similar configurations XP is always faster than Vista even after the latest series of Vista patches and even after SP1. So stop being a whiny fanboy/girl and smell the roses. Even MS knows that Vista was a flop or they wouldn't be rushing to release a new version of windows so soon.

oneofmany

Comments on

I wouldn't quite call that a 'new' taskbar...some minor visual styling changes along with larger quicktask icons...not much different than the aero Vista one...

Don't get me wrong, I like the look of it, it's just not new...in fact, i've seen many skins that look very similar.

schmitty338

Comments on

agreed - and the quick launch icons look HUGE. I was actually amazed how much they were pushing Vista SP1 in a Windows 7 introdution video.
