Logitech buys SightSpeed video chat for $30 million in cash money
In these tough times there are plenty of bargains to be had for companies with liquid reserves and Logitech is taking full advantage, paying $30 million in cash for video conferencing startup SightSpeed. The company doesn't have nearly the name recognition of, say, Skype, but its software has been highly praised and sits at the core of Dell's Video Chat application. Exactly what Logitech will do with its new toy remains to be seen, but some strong integration with the QuickCam line is surely in the cards, and we wouldn't be surprised if this new relationship spawns a competitor to Creative's (also SightSpeed-infused) inPerson -- though hopefully at a price point far, far lower than that clamshell's $859.

I primarily use AOLIM or MSN Messenger's built in messengers for my video chat. Even if this stuff came free with my laptop or desktop I'd never touch it.

Im so happy you represent everyone
Harkonian @ Oct 29th 2008 12:40PM
SightSpeed does multi-person video conferencing--neither AOLIM or MSNIM does this. With SightSpeed you can do up to 4 people at once.

so good for swingers?

@Harkonian
4 at once would be all work, no play.

Isn't saying "Cash money" redundant? Does this mean better integration between hardware and software?
From My Cube @ Oct 29th 2008 11:36AM
cash usually refers to money in your hand literally...having just money could mean its in the bank....atleast from a business perspective

Canoo @ Oct 29th 2008 11:45AM
Agreed
Engadget needs to adopt a comment system similar to Digg or something. I like Digg's.

They'd probably call it Google See or google eye or something stupid like that.
Muhammad-Oli @ Oct 29th 2008 11:42AM
Can we please not say 'cash money'? Hearing it said on 'Yo Momma' as I change channels on my way past MTV is irritating enough as it is.
sam @ Oct 29th 2008 11:44AM

Currently Skype seems to have some type of a deal with Logitech where only Logitech's high end cameras enable the 'hi-res' mode of Skype. I wonder if this means that Skype will be extending it's 'hi-res' service offerings to other web cam makers? ... or worse, if the 'hi-res' mode will be done away with... or better if they simply open it up...

iVisit also does video conferencing but has video conferencing on the mobile phone as well. And you can chat with up to 8 other users too.

Its time now to re-distribute it companies. Companies with money do good deals and widen their portfolio.
