T-Mobile G1 launched in the UK

Just in time for the big (if somewhat quirky) G1 unlocking, Android fans in the UK will be getting their chance to purchase the T-Mobile handset starting today. Britons began queuing up on Oxford Street as early as 5 am to get the phone, currently available for free with a 2-year £40 ($65) monthly contract. And if that wasn't exciting enough, The Gadget Inspectors went to Google's London HQ for a hands-on review (nothing new to Engadget die-hards, but it's interesting to see what they make of the device). Video after the break.

$20 says the iPhone still stays on top (they have a prepaid version over there!) Cheerio!
Sorry to burst your bubble but the iPhone has never been on top in the UK.
Thick. Thick. You are sooooo thick. Everyone knows it isn't the top seller in the UK, so why don't you go ahead and use your 5 IQ points to realize that I meant on top of the G1.
There is nothing worse than someone trying to defend a fail. Admit defeat and be over with it!
You're the one incinuating that an open platform doesn't stand a chance Mr Who. I wouldn't be so hasty to accuse others of lesser mental merit if I were you...
Don't put words in my mouth, they taste funny.
"My, I do say!"
"Indeed"
"What a quaint piece of Rubbish"
tea anyone?
When the iPhone continues to outsell the G1, in what way will this be a fail?
thanks iEye, we do love to make all your comments slowly fade to white!
@iEye
when was the last time you heard an english person?, 1764? and then your assuming we are all southern english with a upper class background and therefore must speak in a stereotypical fashion?
`sigh` come to Manchester, Liverpool, or Newcastle and take the piss out of someone..
PiP PiP
It's the absurdity of the stereotype that makes it funny. I think most everyone is aware that people don't talk like that in the UK.
People get off on getting treated like crap you know. iEye is just going to use this for jerk off material later, if you stop trashing him he'll go away... don't give him what he wants.
Yeah now that's great.. You're taking iEye down in an attempt to make yourself feel better. Nice try, you're the same as, if not worse than iEye.
Actually, iEye's comment did make me chuckle.
Yes, we all know he was perpetrating a ridiculous stereotype ... but it WAS funny, still.
@NIck
Hey, doctor Phil, I'm just telling it as it is, none of my posts are posted with the intent of ticking people off. The truth sucks, deal with it.
Issues = tissues.
I don't wanna become unpopular here but i'm pretty sure Who's right.
I mean, he was saying taht the iPhone will remain on top right? How could you think he was saying anything else?
No, Joseph, It's an 18 month contract. Not 2 years.
I have absolutely no idea who these people are ...and I'm a Brit.
WTF is that video like?
That is something I would expect to see on the Nickelodeon not Engadget...
Having said that I quite enjoyed it, sheer stupidly.
So screw you guys I'm off to watch Sponge Bob.
So who wants some craby paddy's?
Stupidly I typed stupidly, I meant stupidity, how stupid, what stupidity!
£40 monthly contract!!!
I thought £30 for the iphone was high.
I'm currently paying £15 and this is too big a rip off, we are in a recession!
I guess I'm going to have to wait a while for touch phones to get more common/cheaper.
Oh and what's the point of having a slim futuristic touch screen, if you are going to strap a 19th century typewriter to the back of it???
This is why I buy my phones outright and 'Pay As You Go'. The initial outlay can be a little extravagant but then I'm a free man. I sure as hell don't make 30-40 pounds worth of calls/texts and whatnot a month. Which is why I also buy devices that can be my media player and digital camera. I mean, if you're going to carry it around with you all the time it might as well serve another purpose, right?
That price will drop when the intrest dies off quickly. £40/M is a total rip off. T Mobile is taking the piss.
"Which is one megapixel more than the iPhone"
"Especially compared with the iPhone"
That's funny- nobody seems to be comparing new products to the G1, Bold or even the Storm. Tsk, tsk.
"there's 50 free applications available" Well, let's see... hmmm, yep. Definitely beats the iPhone's 3000+ (including a bar code app, OMG!). And yes, there were over 100 apps available the day before the iPhone 3G came out, so phhhhit!
Wow, there is still a line for the iPhone 3G?....
simpy amazing!
yeah man, a long line to return that POS!!!
that must be one of the most bizarre reviews ever. And i think the ratings at the end are a bit too high... 10/10 after saying that you dont like the design of the hardware? The operating may be fantastic, but if you need to carry a huge phone to use it. Trying to not be a fan boy or anything, the iPhone provides a good combination of software on a sleek hardware platform. Even if Android is a better platform than the iPhone OS, the hardware form is still a limiting factor.
Never take any technology reviews from the UK's newspapers seriously. These two seemed to only be doing this video for the money, not out of interest for the device. I wouldn't be surprised if they both use a Nokia 1100 as their main phone.
honestly people people iphone is not the best phone get over it i know because i have both the 2g n 3g and there not the best phones.
The best phone ive had personally is a blackberry ive had a curve went to a iphone 2g the upgraded to 3g got bored got a sidekick slide defo no no the slide is not good i went back to iphone 3g then got my self a blackberry bold.
so
blackberry won haha iphone is the best w/e
i wanna c a g1 hmmm
I don't know the history of what happened between you and punctuation, but you two are obviously bitter, mortal enemies.
I'm fine with typos. I'm fine with grammatical mistakes. I'm fine with leaving out chunks of sentences (as long as meaning isn't messed up too much) and misspelling words. I do them all ALL the time.
You, however, have most brutally assaulted the English language--and scuffed Russian bit, too, not sure how, but that's what's being reported--and I ask you to refrain from touching a keyboard ever again.
And that includes the virtual one on both your "2g n 3g."
Aren't you supposed be Nextel-oriented? What happened to that? Well, I guess a Sidekick is ghetto enough.
I think I finally comprehend why some iphone users feel compelled to perpetually post attacks against the Android operating system - it is insecurity. While they have committed to drinking the iphone cool-aid, they harbor deep seated fears that their choices may have not been the best one, and therefore come here to post about the benefits of their chosen system to validate their decision for themselves. 'Their posts should really be read, not as they are written, but as a cry out for some validation. i.e., when they write "iPhone FTW, Android sux!" one should really read, "Please, someone tell me I made the right choice, I am having doubts and am scared and I need a hug!"
I shall now return to watching Dr. Phil.
I'm embarrassed this is the quality of a review show from the UK... shocking.
That said, I'm glad it was done by people not currently trying to whore attention like most people on youtube.
As am I, Spencer Kelly and the Click! team, they aint.
Don't seem to have very high expectations for tech, probably just a pair of regular journalists with no tech knowledge/background who got singled out by the editor.
And why plug the Telegraph's app? I doubt it will be high on people's download list.
Actually the contract is 18 months and the phone can be had for free from 35£ or around 55$. Still quite expensive as uk price plans go.
Sorry i feel stupid now. It is 40£, the combi 35 needs a W&W add on so I do not get it why go for that plan...? Tmob makes no sense on this one.
Because that has unlimited texts, if you used next to no mins and lots and lots of texts then I suppose it would be better value.
But who the hell uses 800 mins?
Oh BOY! A touch-screen and a sliding QWERTY keyboard! What a NEW concept! I've never seen anything LIKE it!
Aside from HTC phones from years ago >.<
That retard makes it sound like the G1 is the first phone like that.
...why the low rank? I was insulting the stupidly ridiculous video, in case you hadn't noticed
what about getting a new editor who know how to compress and normalize sounds? The music so loud compare to the voices and everything sound dead... tss tss...
And who do you have in mind?
someone from say Oh Canada?
huuuu... Boards of Canada is a band, and a great one! I live in japan... here they would do the sound job right but add lots of crappy mono twiiiiirling sounds and glow the image to the max!
Yeah everyone loves BOC.
I currently pay about £35 per month for my Samsung U600 on t-mobile so I have no problem paying an extra fiver a month for the G1. Can't wait to get my hands on one to be honest. I don't care how fat and chunky it is - functionality is what floats my boat. Did I really just say floats my boat?!
Apple do what they do very well and the iphone is a great little bit of kit but they need to realise that the future is all about open source baby! Once the general public become more tech savvy they're going to demand functionality over appearance.
Btw, does the G1 use internal memory and/or memory cards?
In defence of my country, I have no idea who these self appointed 'gadget inspectors' are, nor do I approve of their lowbrow, childish gadget reviewing style. It would seem that they are an independent panel of quasi-presenter-nerds created by the Telegraph, which is a newspaper favoured mostly by the undiscerning pseudo-intellectual middle classes.
The very people who are more likely to by iPhones, in fact.
i want to beat the living hell out of both of the "reviewers" i couldn't watch britain tv.
Does anyone else notice that the umbrellas look like those from Umbrella Corp from Resident Evil?
