To me, it's a machine that's a bit crippled in terms of specs, and is to act as a cheap gateway to the internet. That's it. It's a portable machine intended for you to pull out of your bag and write some emails or surf the net. Obviously, the speed of an Intel Atom isn't THAT bad, and so people tried to find other uses for netbooks. However, it's not a stead-fast rule that netbooks have to be tiny (say 10" or under). It's a steadfast rule that it should be cheap and portable, and allow you to carry around and surf the net whenever you want.

The only features a netbook needs are many different ways to connect to the internet, which means it requires the latest ways to do so. It doesn't need DVI out, or the ability to play games. It's THESE things that take these machines away from the netbook category, not the size. After you start adding things, it's an ultraportable, not a netbook.

Netbooks are popular because what everyone is expecting an ultraportable, when all this does is raise the specs, and price, of the machine too high. I don't want to own a $500 machine with VGA, expresscard slot, etc....to carry around in my bag to surf the net. Give me 3G, WiMax, etc. Let me use it as an internet device.

Ian

Comments on 12-inch not-Eee PC S101 followup expected this year

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w268/Leetdude/MahmoudSortofwant-2.jpg

Atropos

Comments on 12-inch not-Eee PC S101 followup expected this year

ZX1?
