ASUS Eee PC 1002HA hands-on and video: looks a lot like the S101

The folks over at Laptop have gotten some quality face time with a pre-production model of ASUS' 10-inch Eee PC 1002 HA, and they seem to like a lot of what they're seeing. It boasts stylings reminiscent of both the Eee PC S101 (trackpad) and the 1000H (keyboard), and as such is basically a hybridized version of the two, though the test model "wouldn't power on" so we can't got much further than that. We do however, know that it'll house a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU with 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, and that it'll have a two-cell battery which ASUS claims will give users five hours of juice (though that sounds pretty suspect to us). The Eee PC 1002 HA is expected to ready to roar on the first of December for $499, but if you simply can't wait until then to have a look at it, hit the read like for more photos and a really, really interesting video.

About time Asus released a laptop...

They're really falling behind the whole releasing laptops thing

Bleh, this thing looks sexier than my 1000h, but I think I like the 1000h's overall design better.
Chin-Poh @ Nov 21st 2008 2:18PM
I think I had heard this would replace the 1000H series. : 0
matt @ Nov 21st 2008 2:43PM
I think you misunderstand how to measure the power of batteries. The 'cell' notation was an easy way to differentiate between EEE models. This probably has two higher capacity cells in it than the 4/6 cells of the existing EEE series.
matt @ Nov 21st 2008 2:44PM
That was aimed at everyone complaining about the 2 cell battery. I hate this comment system...
Matthew C @ Nov 21st 2008 9:09PM
wow - it almost doesn't look cheap enough to be an eee
BJ is Gooder @ Nov 21st 2008 2:22PM
2 cell battery? C'mon Asus - you can do better than that...
That means 5 hours in sleep mode.
matt @ Nov 21st 2008 5:16PM
No it doesn't. The number of cells is not directly related to battery life.
Eltorro @ Nov 21st 2008 2:22PM
5 hours from a 2 cell? Don't make me giggle!
Sam Zebian @ Nov 21st 2008 2:36PM
Yeah I know. I had an eee 1000 with a 6-cell and got like 5-7 hours in Vista, and now I returned it (too small of an SSD) and got the Asus N10 with a 4-cell with a "rated" battery life of 5 hours, it really gets 3.5-4.5 though. I can't complain too much though, it seems to have been plenty of time for me so far.
shawn.zenz @ Nov 21st 2008 2:50PM
Have the ASUS F3SV..
Rated at 4 Hours with 6-cell. I get 2 at best.
Never trust ASUS with battery life ratings.
Macdelaney @ Nov 21st 2008 2:35PM
Maybe it has Poulsbo hence the 5 hours from a 2 cell battery, although it still sound fishy.
Precurse @ Nov 21st 2008 2:35PM
Guys guys guys ... Do your homework.
The 2 cell battery on this baby has 4200ma/h. this is THE SAME capacity as the older 4 cells. You guys are falling for the # of cells myth the same as people who fell for the P4 Netburst Mhz myth AND megapixel myth.
Also, don't be surprised if they start releasing newer netbooks with higher batt life. the 945 Intel chipset chunks out 11watts of power, while the Atom CPU uses a mere 3 watts (2 watts on the new 5xx version). If they can drop in a better chipset, you'll likely see battery life approaching 10 hours for 6 cell versions (or 3-4 cells with the new batteries maybe).
Félix @ Nov 21st 2008 2:48PM
Okay thanks for the tip but then wtf with the cells ?
Stop mentionning that engadget and give us the REAL piece of info here !
4200mAh = 5 hours that believable.
and by the way it's NOT mA/h it's mA*h.
A battery gives you a current (in mA) for a certain time (that's hours^^)
So mA*hours or mAh.
puckotg22 @ Nov 21st 2008 2:36PM
Maybe the 2 cells are REALLY REALLY BIG cells?! Yeah, thats the ticket!!
becu55 @ Nov 21st 2008 3:32PM
Yeah, you're right, that's exactly correct.
AVG @ Nov 21st 2008 2:45PM
Want dual-core Atom.
: (
How long must I wait?
RAQ @ Nov 21st 2008 3:21PM
Why would Intel realease the dual core Atom? It is logical to milk the single core Atom as there is no competetor, when/if AMD release a chip to rival the Atom, Intel can then release the Dual core Atom.
AVG @ Nov 21st 2008 4:25PM
Don't say stupid things. The key is to stay ahead of the game, not just keep up with it. If Intel did that, then they WOULD be AMD.
LondonConsultant @ Nov 21st 2008 2:56PM
This new 1002HA is an inch thinner than the old 1000H. Nice...
Raymond @ Nov 21st 2008 2:59PM
It starts to looks less plastic and more stylish, nice work!
dscho @ Nov 21st 2008 3:43PM
Is this _finally_ an Eee PC 1000 that does _not_ lock you in with that bug- and virus-ridden "operating" system?
matt @ Nov 21st 2008 5:17PM
XP?
TangoBravo @ Nov 21st 2008 5:24PM
Nice looking machine... but this post sure got hit with the poor-grammar-stick....
...'can't got much further' ... 'to ready to roar'... 'hit the read like'...

This may sound crazy, but the thing that holds me back from buying an EEE of any type is the right shift key.
I use the right shift key 99% of the time I'm touch typing, and I've worked on a keyboard like this before - with a tiny right shift, on the far side of the up-arrow key, and it was maddeningly frustrating.
Once Asus redesigns the keyboard, I'll probably buy one to tote around.
Peter @ Nov 21st 2008 11:07PM
ASUS, I'm still waiting for the ZX series...
stop messing around with those toybooks please
Jash Sayani @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:02AM
Perfect.!!! I am going to Dubai during Christmas and had planned to get a netbook for me. This one is perfect. 1.6 Atom processor, 160 Gigs of HD... All that I want.
Expect I need 2 GB of RAM. Is there a 2 GB RAM version...?
Please let me know.

When did it become proper to add "-ized" after anything and everthing?
i.e. "...and as such is basically a hybridized version of the two..."
It's just a hybrid version, not a hybridized version.

That love making between the 1000H and S101 didn't pass on one of the good genes of the 1000H. Why have they got rid of the hotkeys?
