T-Mobile G1s now shipping with 3.5mm headphone adapters included
It's not going to somehow magically conjure a jack where there's currently nothing more than a sad-looking ExtUSB port, but new G1 buyers can take some solace in the knowledge that they'll be able to plug in, turn it up, and tune out right out of the box. We've received official word from HTC that 3.5mm headphone adapters for the ExtUSB port are now being bundled with the phone, meaning you won't be stuck with that janky (no, seriously, it's insanely terrible) headset with the special connector that you get free of charge; after all, when we're blasting the Jonas Brothers at full tilt, we need the kind of fidelity that only high-end earbuds can provide. What, you got a problem with that?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

This

Those...
Them?
"This" is low ranked, but "That" is highly ranked...
Engadget, you are forever inexplicable.
THESES!
They
Clearly we like that and not this duuuuuhhhh
STUPID phone design.
And they did the same thing to the Dash.
"when we're blasting the Jonas Brothers at full tilt, we need the kind of fidelity that only high-end earbuds can provide. What, you got a problem with that?"
Well yes I got a problem with that...
Its like this and like that and like this and uh
What about free ones for the people who already bought one. I don't have one personally nor intend to buy one but I'd be annoyed to be honest.
I fall into that category... and you're right... I'm pisssssssed... I love Google (clearly), I love Android, and I love my G1... but I miss my iPod Touch in terms of convenience...
Boo-hoo.
You can call T-Mobile's customer service. They'll send you one.
forget G1 and cross over to the other side where the grass is green, the water is fresh, with pink ponies hopping around. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 has 3.5mm jackhole, crisp VGA, actual keyboard, copypaste (!) and heaps more.. this is from someone who just dumped his iPhone 3G!
Yeah, get the X1, it's only $800. Great comparison.
@ auricom Jackhole? YOU are the jackhole!
@ Ako1pinoy
What about shadow owners, it has the same jack on it and if they would send me one i would be so happy.
RTFC!
I have a G1, which has a keyboard, and copy and paste... douche.
And yes, $800? I concur... blech.
Oh and I don't know why Ako1pinoy is highly ranked... I just called T-Mobile customer service and that isn't the case....
I called the customer service, got transferred 5 times, and the result is: no, they are not giving it to early adopters, and, no, they don't sell it too.
What about us preorder-ers?
You just HAD to have your QWERTY keyboard.....
Good news for new buyers, but how about us early adopters? (It's probably still a bit too soon to say that.)
Any word on if T-Mobile will have these for purchase at their stores?
Yeah no mention of us poor schleps who opted to take a chance on this seriously flawed Chinese piece o crapola?
sorry but this think sucks for way too many reasons than I can describe. the only saving grace are the aps.
I tried to go back to my 2g iphone on tmob but the inet wont seem to work.
I think I'll actually go att and I cant believe I am saying that.... thats how bad I feel about tmob's late entry into the 21st century.
you can buy em online for as low as $6 after shipping.... They even have one where you can charge it at the same time for $15.
just eBay it dude, they've been around before this I'm sure
I think the point is that it is kind of ridiculous to have to go out of your way to pay for something that now even T-Mobile has realized should have been included free of charge in the first place.
I heard T-mobile will give adopters to those early buyers too. Call customer service.
thank you t-mobile for listening to your customers
If they were listening to their users, they wouldn't even need to have an adapter. Are headphone jacks more expensive than USB or proprietary ports?
I think it would be more expensive to somehow work it into the design of the phone.
Ahhh, tis a good show on HTC's part. I hate that damned ExtUSB connector...all of my HTC devices have it, and I have had to fashion 3.5 adaptors for all of em!
OMG A HEADPHONE ADAPTER! Woah... that's lame.
Great move! They make a mini-usb just to bundle an adapter for you :D
I'd consider one if the jack was actually IN the phone. I'll stick with my trusty-ish N76 for now :P
so. it has the form factor of a headphone extender. its no big deal.
Yeah? And what about other people with HTC phones that want free 3.5mm headphone adapters? Touch, Touch Diamond, Titan, Touch Pro, Touch HD, etc. come to mind.
I know some of those are old news but come on! Putting this as a native function on your phones can't POSSIBLY be that difficult!
touch hd has a 3.5mm port
sucks to not with t-mobile
I don't understand the need for sarcasm in this article. T-Mobile did something really nice and unnecessary to satisfy its customers, and to be honest, I don't think you can make a extUSB to 3.5mm cable look any more attractive than that.
It's better than pulling a Jobs and saying "just deal with it" like the recessed 3.5mm port on the iPhone.
Really nice and unnecessary? How about "our iPhone (iPod PMP + Phone) killer, has no A2DP or 3.5mm jack, and is selling like shit! We better make the big sacrifice of including this 10 cent adapter!" God love our benevolent benefactor T-Mobile. They better give these to preorderers and everyone else who bought one before today. I have been an advocate of Android and a defender of it as well, but that hardware is God awful crap, so is their 3G network. Step up to the plate, T-Mobile.
I agree, the decision to not include a cheap $0.10 adapter was EVIL!!!!
C'mon you customers chose to use your shite service at a hefty monthly charge... WTF? Stupidity like this is why GM Chrystler are going bye bye!
Stupid Stupid Stupid!!!
Hmmm. include 10 cent adapter or Jerk everyone around..... hmmmm, I shoulf take a private jet to the next state to confirm this decision...
T-Mobile's 3G network is bad? It sure as hell isn't in Minneapolis, and a load better than AT&T out here, at least on the iPhone. I'm happy with what they've pushed out so far.
Valicore, even though it is low cost, it was a nice gesture that they did not have to do. All businesses try to save money even on the smallest levels. They could've pulled a Steve Jobs and just said "deal with it" like the iPhone's recessed 3.5mm jack. Also, if things like this are so cheap, why can't Apple include a 20 cent wall charger with their $300 iPods? How about a 2 cent installation CD with iTunes and a user manual? They certainly can, but they won't, just like T-Mobile didn't have to include this, but they did.
iEye,
Eat a dick.
- Engadget readers everywhere
I agree with Shadow. It seems like post after post, nobody reading Engadget (or writing for Engadged) actually seems to understand how big of a deal "little" things are to large corporations. For instance, if Sprint were to take a "did you buy a HTC phone from us? Call us and we'll send you an adapter" approach to the situation, it would costs them a ton of money. And it wasn't Sprint's fault that the HTC phones didn't have a 3.5 jack. If anybody should be sending out adapters, it's HTC. If it was that big of a deal, then people should have responded by not buying the phone or going to Radio Shack and plunking down a whopping $3.
Besides, I personally think that the included set of earbuds are perfectly adequate for most applications. It's not like you're just casually doing some sound engineering on your Touch Pro on the way to work...
In fact T-Mobile's 3G network is a lot more reliable than AT&T's network here in Phoenix. Also, their 3G speeds are faster than Verizon's so called 3G speeds. As far as data plans go, where else are you gonna find a smart phone plan for less than $30 a month. AT&T sure as shit don't have it for their beloved iPhone. Yeah, you get the iPhone for $199, but you have to take on a $50 a month data plan with a 4GB cap on it, vs. only $30 for a truly unlimited data plan, not to mention the ability to tether your phone to a laptop and use your internet connection on the go, something you can't do with a Verizon plan and definitely not something that you can do with an iPhone without AT&T finding out and charging you for.
Soon they'll begin to attach a stylus to top the sales :) I like rather their idea of free SW market, comparing to monopolistic iPhone. Where there are third party sites like http://www.androidfreeware.org/ and similar. This is really groundbreaking about Android. But G1, it's not really that good. There will be better Androids coming very soon.
hmm how does this even work? does the usb port have additional pins aside from the 4 standard usb pins?
