So much of modern music and the history of popular culture has been affected by the Beatles. You can't just say "the Beatles cant sing" when that in itself is a matter of musical taste. They were pretty much the first pop group, first big "boy-band", etc. They were one of the first influential non-classical musicians who turned music around into a simpler, easily accessible product for the common person to listen and enjoy. If it weren't for The Beatles, we may still be listening to (old school) jazz, classical, and perhaps a blend of traditional music from other countries around the world that would have been developed if "pop" hadn't come around. To enjoy an album, we'd have to spending a half an hour or more to listen to a single song.

Personally, I enjoy the 4 to 5 minute snippets of music we get today, and I do enjoy my rock and indie music, and even some hip hop, so I appreciate The Beatles' existence.

Ian

Comments on Paul McCartney: Beatles on iTunes stalled, I'm not dead

They're not all like Yellow Submarine. Try Revolver (specifically Eleanor Rigby and I'm only sleeping). Some of the more pop songs they have on there (taxman, and your bird can sing) are really great, too. It's not pop as it is today. Why?

When EMI initially agreed with ITunes and other Digital Distribution companies they did it out of profit sakes... they were just on the green side of broke at the time, now they are just as bad off as they were before but the companies selling these downloads are raking in the cash, and they want more of it, and since their initial contracts were short term only they are in a position to renegotiate them.

Who owns the rights to these songs? Well in this case EMI, which they retained after their split with Capital in the late 90's. This pricing has little to do with Sony/ATV or Michael Jackson, they don't have any real rights to the Beatles recordings or how they are distributed, those are retained by the original rights holders EMI. What Sony/ATV (mostly) and Michael Jackson (partially) have control over is recording rights and distribution rights, but since EMI has maintained their contractual obligations to the rights holders they have the primary say in how the original Beatles recordings are distributed, and these rights only apply to Northern Songs Ltd, which started in 1963 specifically for The Beatles music but doesn't cover much of the original catalog which were published and recorded directly through EMI and not Northern Songs Ltd. Paul McCartney has had success in purchasing titles not written under Northern Songs Ltd, which include early songs like "Please Please Me", "Love Me Do", "P.S. I Love You", and "Tell Me Why" under his own publishing company MPL Communications.

Also, blaming Yoko Ono for this would be as bad as blaming her for the Beatles break up, they both come down to two things Money and Ego, the Beatles break-up was due to Paul and John wanting more money from their music, which couldn't be done under The Beatles, and their clashing Egos, and this break down in negotiations between EMI and Digital Distribution companies is because EMI wants more money for the music and they have a big ego about their position in the music industry, which has slipped dramatically in the past 15 years.

3dpenguin

Comments on Paul McCartney: Beatles on iTunes stalled, I'm not dead

Which is I why I say F*Ck em all and download their music illegally for free.
