New Wii drives breaking modchips, hearts, legs
Are you a Wii fanatic? Do you enjoy getting "in" "there" and really messing about? Well here's a word to the wise: if you want to keep on keepin' on with your funky mods and hacks, don't get a new Wii. Apparently, fresh shipments of Nintendo's cash cow are stocked with an optical drive configuration that somehow breaks current modchips -- thus rendering your freedom from gaming oppression null and void. It seems that the drives sport a new fusion of older components (including the controller chip) which contribute to the disruption in your regularly scheduled program of l33t hackery. Luckily for you, you're too hardcore to spring for a new system -- so you're safe from this glaring affront to your personal freedom... right?

The moding community will probably find a work around solution for this but yeah in the mean time I guess keep ur current units
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
finally an engadget blogger i recognize. ha. Well i guess i have to say something about this topic... hmmm, I would have to say that all new wii gamers are most likely either really old and dont know how to mod, or really young and dont know how to mod. ok peace.
Yep they completely removed one of the controller chips and combined it with the other one. You can even see the blank space where it use to be on the PCB. It's probably going to be a while before a new mod chip is released, but having a mod chip is kind of pointless now with the backup loader running pretty much perfectly now with only a few errors. If anything Nintendo should be working harder to break that if they want to stop piracy.
You admit that you use the pirateloader as it lets your Wii run pirate copys & a pirate copy is always a pirate copy even as a backup .
In fact if the police come into your home right now they #have both the legal right & moral right to conferscate everything computer related from your home .
1. The police can't bust you for possessing a mod chip. Distributing, yes, possessing, not so much. The most amount of trouble you could really get into would be a civil suit with Nintendo. Your situation would be true if the RIAA gets its way, but I digress...
2. While you can make the argument that just because they are primarily used to play pirated games, I can make the argument that I paid for it so I should be allowed to do with it what I want. This is a similar concept as ripping a CD to my computer. Sure, I could put it on the internet for all to enjoy, but I probably won't so bugger off.
3. Homebrew: Because not all game developers are in it for money/fame/women. Some just want to make fun games for all.
4. What bug got up your ass causing you to freak out about piracy? If you don't like it, don't do it, and don't hassle us about it. I'm sorry that we can't all be as self-righteous as you. Prick.
@Kawaii:
Yeah, how dare people make copies of things that they paid good money for? If they lose their original copy, they should have to buy an entirely new one, dang it.
Pirating discussions aside, you are still an idiot. No, the police do not have that right or obligation, and seriously, what are you talking about? You watch too many movies, man...
new DVD drive but still not DVD player, smooth move Nintendo
You can pick up an $10 DVD player if you like to. :/
No point of using an expensive system to play DVDs when a cheap one can.
Yea and I'm sure that $10 player can do 5.1 sound too, screw you Nintendo your making profit off every console you sell and you couldn't even throw that in, god. (been two years and I'm still pissed about that)
low sales -> new features /\ new console
From Link2977's post: "screw you Nintendo for making profit on every console you launch"...... what??? You think it's unreasonable for a company to try to make money off their core unit? Microsoft are only making a loss on 360s because a) the billions they make from their other businesses can subsidise the development of a market they want to lead in and b) they were getting outsold and needed to be more competitive. They're not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.
Nintendo can't do this because all they do is make games consoles. If it's selling well without a DVD drive and it's cheaper for consumers - therefore more attractive a proposition - as a result then what else are they realistically going to do? Give it away?
Geez, you all need to get over the Wii not having a DVD player thing. So what? If you stack up all of the electronics in my household that play DVD's, I count 13 DVD players off the top of my head. I think one device (the Wii) not playing DVD's isn't going to break my heart!!
Ouch, could have had 14!?! Tough luck, maybe next time
meh, N64 is just fine with me
I just bought an N64 the other day for like 35 bucks! Unfortunately, I didn't do enough research and found out that some of the old games I loved are really expensive. 35 bucks for Conker's, 25 for LoZ:MM, etc.
i play smash bros all the time. the original is still my favorite.
I must not be geek enough, because I didn't understand a word you said, Topolsky!
To all Wii modders: Just buy yourself a plain PC, gotdammit... Install Linux and tinker to world's end all hell you want.
P.S. It is quite ridiculous to hear from same person for the same reason - proprietary platform - Apple bashing but console praising...
Nintendo love games so much it's bled over to hating films. No DVDs for you!
:D good one!
Sweet! My old Wii's resale value just went up in the eyes of the "right customer"!
Not worried in the least. Still got one of the older Wii's with backup loader v0.3 Gamma (please release a new version!) and dvdx for dvd playing...not that I particularly use it for video dvd's since the 360 does the same job better, but regardless it's handy for playing homebrew via dvd :) Glad I never sprung on a mod chip.
modchips are useless for a while now, as they sealed those legs of chips on drives, but people seem to turn to softmod based on zelda hack now.
If you get a wii clip +wiikey/d2c chip, the issue with cut legs is not a problem anymore.
If you are talking about the epoxy Wiis, all you need to do is apply a heat gun and break off the epoxy with an x-acto blade. it's actually pretty easy and no it's not a gooey mess, breaks off in chunks.
I think Joshua needs to re-read his source. It doesn't say anything about breaking chips, there's just nowhere to solder the damn things to. :)
I'll keep my d2b (without cut legs) til the day I, or it, dies!
Well you can still always buy a older drive model at www.divineo.com/cn to replace the newer drive. The connection type is the same and have been confirmed to work by some of the chip install shops.
Nintendo says they lose tons of money each year on pirating. I would like to know, how much money do they spend to stop this? Because they have released a lot of updates and probably put a lot of money into "protecting" the DSi from hackers. Yet, hackers still won, after less than a month. So I ask, why does Nintendo waste our time and their money trying to stop something that can't be stopped? We have to waste our time finding new hack methods, hackers have to make new hacks, and Nintendo develops ways to stop it in a never ending battle.
Same reason people put locks on their doors. It keeps out some people and forces the thieves to actually work to get your prized collection of "action figures".
I love how modchips are always touted for homebrew when in reality everyone i know who has one only uses them to play backups. Not just on the wii, but on all consoles and portables.
I happen to like scratching up backup discs and leaving my originals in storage where they are safe from harm.
I just feel liek saying....
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ... wait taking a breath... Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most people don't know this but you can run backup games and homebrew on a Wii without a modchip! Sure, you need to meet a few conditions first... like having a 3.3 Wii (I think 3.4 works now too), an SD card, and Twilight Princess. After that it's cakewalk. Softmodding works really well on the Wii and the need for modchips has pretty much fallen off the face of the earth.
