But since even Apple recognizes that the SRS WOW effects are crap (hence the reason there is no toggle for it in the iPod software,) SRS is making a direct appeal (read: end run around Apple) to the consumers via a hardware add-on. The reason why it is so expensive is that SRS would usually get a few bucks for every unit sold (like they do with sound cards and motherboards) for their software. Now they actually have to come up with their own hardware too.

Taken directly from their advertising:
"By dynamically locating and restoring audio cues buried in the original source material, iWOW Adaptor ensures you experience your music and videos the way the artist intended."

Here's why you probably don't want the thing:
1. The original source material is generally the Master Recording. This is usually in a vault at a record company. What it is left highlighting in the case of a PMP is whatever small defects that exist due to the re-encoding of the media to fit on your device.
2. The way the artist intended is usuallly the way you legaly aquire the media in the first place, or live. In order to accomplish this the device would have to re-encode it to the original format on the fly. I don't think that this device is sophisticated enough to do that.

Now, I do get things wrong on occasion; so feel free to correct me if you wish. But I will stand by my opinion that SRS sound effects are crap. I have yet to find anything that they have made sound "better." Different, yes (hallway effect, auditorium effect, etc.,) but not better.

Kali4

Comments on

Read that as "SRL Labs."
