Then I can finally ask a target customer something which has puzzled me for a long time. If you're looking at the 18.4" monster, do you realize that it is just about the least portable thing in the world, right? And if it is going to be just sitting on your desk, do you know that you could either build or buy a desktop with superior respects in every regard? So I would really like to know what is the rationale for buying a "portable" computer which isn't portable at all when you could get all the benefits for much cheaper.

Tonicboy

Comments on Toshiba goes bonkers with Qosmio laptop upgrades: GX, FX and SpursEngine G50

Desktop = stuck in one place

Laptop = surf and game wherever you want to in the house.

Seth

Comments on Toshiba goes bonkers with Qosmio laptop upgrades: GX, FX and SpursEngine G50

@DBrim,

Seth has a very good point. I also move quite a bit, and travel a lot to places where I will be for a couple of months at a time, so a laptop with desktop capabilities is important for me. My oldest laptop (which I got from my mother second-hand and was four years old) worked beautifully for four years before its power supply and motherboard finally crapped out. The second, which I bought in 2003, is still around gathering dust in its retirement; save for the cooling system breaking down last year (which I was able to replace), it did good work. The current Toshiba, six months old, is in great shape.

Meanwhile I have also owned an Acer and two Compaqs in that time. The Acer is still around, but performed like crap before I modded it up (and replaced the cracked LCD). One of my Compaqs was in and out of the shop or getting fixed on a constant basis; the other still runs nicely for an XP machine.

Most of the problems people have with computers have to do with mistreating the hell out of them; I've broken a couple of LCD screens myself over time due to carelessness. Other times, as in the case of the Compaq's (and most recently, with my fiancee's Dell craptop), the laptops have been problem children right off the factory floor. But the Toshibas I've owned have served me fine. And chances are, most brands (save for Acer and Dell) are of good quality.

Methinks Edward that you may be unlucky -- or careless.
