For example, an unlocked iPhone 3G in the UK would work perfectly on 3-4 other networks.

In the US, it still won't work on Verizon or Sprint. Been waiting for this for months, and months. Now (or in the the damn near future) I can use Tmobile with out any sketchy sim adapters, or paying exorbitant costs for a factory unlocked 3G from overseas.
