Sky says 2012 London Olympics could be in 3D
Europe still isn't the place to be for limitless HD content, but London in particular could be a 3D extravaganza come 2012. The host city for the next Summer Olympics may be coming to your living room like never before, as Brian Lenz, head of product design and innovation at Sky, proclaimed that "there is a very good chance you'll see the London Olympics in 3D." The satcaster has already confessed to filming events in 3D, and given that the wide distribution of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in HD was all the rage, we suppose the third-dimension is the next logical step forward. Mirroring our own hopes and dreams, Lenz stated that what it really wanted was "glasses free technology." Here's hoping we inch closer to that at CES 2009.[Thanks, Ben]

3D will just make it even more obvious that the Chinese gymnasts are underage.
albi @ Dec 18th 2008 2:37PM
by the time it's 2012 they'll all grow up and beat the crap out of our gymnasts, again
Anthony @ Dec 18th 2008 2:42PM
age is jus a number and where knowledge determines ability =]
dont hate the player hate the game SON!
phanbouy fan fan @ Dec 18th 2008 2:49PM
am i the only one who's been a little irked by the vernacular of one grown man calling another, unrelated grown man "son"?
Wolfticket @ Dec 18th 2008 3:14PM
Grown men??? This is an internet comments section we are talking about remember.
TareX @ Dec 19th 2008 1:06AM
@ Anthony
Age is not "just a number". Younger gymnasts can perform more twists and twirls easier, have less balance issues and less room for error. It was just plain cheating and an international scandal for the Chinese worth spreading.
Nastia and Shawn FTW
Quantic @ Dec 18th 2008 2:24PM
Lets hope they don't make that logo 3d, transparent might be a better option.
Anthony @ Dec 18th 2008 2:26PM
it is kind of messed up isn't it.

horrible logo, if it was just a contest of logos, New York would have won hands down

It looks like Lisa Simspon giving someone a nosh. It's embarrasing.

Don't you mean hands 'up'

I think they hired the company that made those gold crapped brick cell phones. I can't tell which design is worse / looks more like something I'd find in king Midas's toilet.

@12344321: No way, Madrid 2012 logo was a lot better http://www.38one.com/image/madrid.jpg

You just dont get used to how shit that logo is, do you...
Oli D @ Dec 18th 2008 2:26PM
It just makes me proud to be British.
We have come up with something vulgar, but the whole world just has to take it for a period of time because thats the rules.
Quantic @ Dec 18th 2008 2:28PM
It offends everything I stand for as a graphic designer.
Charles @ Dec 18th 2008 2:33PM
£200,000 well spent. I make that £6060 per line on the border of the yellow area.
Of course there's also the border of the yellow area to consider which halves the price per line, making it an absolute bargain.
Chromana @ Dec 18th 2008 2:42PM
Check out the video of some random guy making a copy of the logo. Here's what it says: "The logo for the London 2012 Olympics cost £400,000. Here is a video of me recreating the logo in 7.58 minutes."
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oicBOVZcO4Y
Go watch! It's unbelievable what was spent...
Anthony @ Dec 18th 2008 2:43PM
@quantic
i second that -____-"
ebinroy @ Dec 18th 2008 8:52PM
It's been over a year and that horrible "logo" still assaults my eyes every time I see it.
I honestly think the only reason they don't get rid of it is they're too proud to admit they wasted £400,000 on something an eight year old could have created in five minutes using ms paint.
Oli D @ Dec 18th 2008 2:24PM
sky can suck my toes.

"...Here's hoping we inch closer to that at CES 2009..."
So that means we have just 6 inches to go until 2012?
Sorry for my mathematical rant :)

The 2012 logo looks like a design they would have put on pencil case in the 90's :P
Jake Tobak @ Dec 18th 2008 2:38PM
Please don't bring the 90's into this.

That's what I want. Wrestlers in a unitard with their legs wide open on my big screen. NOT!
Why can't just having an awesome picture be it. Why does it have to go 3d?
andres @ Dec 18th 2008 2:33PM
because 4D is just too hard.

damn that logo, its like its getting worse with age
Gaucho @ Dec 18th 2008 2:45PM
Much like British women, that logo does not age gracefully at all.
Oli D @ Dec 18th 2008 3:08PM
Ho ho ho,
merry wefuckingfoundedyourcountrysodoesntcrackwiseaboutourmammas-mas.
Samboini @ Dec 18th 2008 3:15PM
Gaucho, lucky for me your mother is aging gracefully. In fact, "I will take your mother out to a nice seafood dinner and NEVER call her again!"
Gaucho @ Dec 18th 2008 3:27PM
Samboini, props for the comment, but your dismount could use some work. it just sounds like you provided my mother some cunilingus and called it a day. still, props.
Oli D- sorry if I insulted your "...mammas-mas" but in all honesty the british age as well as a tomato on a hot radiator. They're nice people though. btw, who said I was in the U.S.?
Oli D @ Dec 18th 2008 3:38PM
I never mentioned the US.
You speak English.
Lets skim over the main English speaking nations,
USA
Canada (yeah ok, some of it)
Australia
New Zealand
Not meant to be a dig, just thought i should try and uphold the honor of Britian's fine Gentleladies.
Alpha-Toxic @ Dec 18th 2008 6:22PM
Well, Oli D,
First of all, you seem to lack common knowledge. Otherwise you would know that "gaucho" refers to people coming from a certain part of South America. I have heard the term used mostly for Argentinians, but also for Brazilians.
Then, you lack basic logic skills. Otherwise you would have googled "CABJ". That's "Club Atlético Boca Juniors". As English, you should have some basic knowledge about football and know that they are from Argentina.
And third, you come out as rather ignorant with your assumption that only people in the above countries could speak English.
Now, insulting the women of a whole nation is obviously bad, but didn't do much better either.
BTW, I have absolutely no connection with Argentina, English is not my first language and London's olympic logo sucks (literally).
Oli D @ Dec 19th 2008 3:22AM
It sure does.
Unfortunately were not terribly well educated on the Argentinians because of the actions of a certain Margret Thatcher, because of her we only learn about the war, not the football teams of the nation. I also detest football, so i lack in that area also.
The reason i assumed he was from an English speaking nation is because i thought he was so fluent, which i would say is a compliment.
You assume that all people from England are fascinated by Football, and thus spend time trawling through the various clubs of the world.
Yours Sincerely, in faith and trust,
Wayne Rooney...

December 2012; according to the Mayan calendar and Nostradamus is the great change/end of the world. This will be a great 3D send off for all we humans. Party on London!
Oli D @ Dec 18th 2008 2:54PM
What do you think will cause the end of the world?
This crummy logo of course.
musback @ Dec 18th 2008 6:33PM

WTF is that ghastly logo? No way they're using that!
dale1v @ Dec 18th 2008 3:35PM
Yes, they are. more than 80% of the UK hated it, but they're still keeping it, the rectums.
"People are just going to have to get used to it," said Adrian Bassett, of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). "We are not going to go away and change it."
