Blech. I spent the weekend installing and playing with it on my AppleTV. While it's interesting, I simply don't have the time for that. Same old thing - great for geeks with time on their hands, bad for everyone else.

Frankfurter

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

You are smoking crack. There isn't an easier to configure or easier to use fully-featured media player than XBMC.

One thing I'll give you: The original XBMC was written with the Xbox controller in mind, and with one of those in hand everything 'just works' as it should. A selects, B goes back, triggers scroll through menus etc, etc. Still, if it takes you more than an hour to configure XBMC, you really should consider a new hobby IMHO.

JerkyChew

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

Smoking crack? Hardly. Years ago I learned to quit equating things that are difficult to use with how smart I am. Actually, I'm so smart that I quit wasting precious hours of my life pouring over forums to figure out how to use a product (ie, Linux, XBMC, my microwave, etc). Kidding about the Linux thing, of course.

Listen, I bought an AppleTV, plugged it in, it too my crack-addicted head through a couple of quick steps, and boom - I was browsing pictures, downloading movies, listening to tunes, whatever.

XBMC - once you find a compatible flash drive to install it with, you are presented with -no- working items. You have to add everything, and you better hope you know how to do crack-addicted things like SMB, file sharing, opening firewalls, blah blah blah. Maybe your "full featured" statement is your disclaimer, perhaps arguing something like AppleTV isn't full-featured. But with XBMC, you gotta work pretty damn hard to browse bad content on Hulu. Thanks, I'll pass.

Wait! It's open-source though! As I said, don't equate open-source with cool, good, and easy everytime.

Frankfurter

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

How can you compare an Apple TV with XBMC? The Apple TV plays only DRM infested, highly specific video files that you constantly pay for, and at best it does maybe three other things (music, photos and Youtube). Both music and photos requires a running instance of iTunes on the network, so server type or local media sharing is out the question. Which is all fine if that's all you want and enjoy giving Apple your money for music and movies.

For people that want more, and want to enjoy the media they already have (downloaded, ripped, whatever), there are applications like XBMC. Nobody that uses XBMC can even imagine using the ATV as an alternative. Obviously it's more complicated than the ATV's, because it does way more things. Most importantly, the point you're missing is that XBMC is user driven, not driven by a business model like the ATV.

"..crack-addicted things like SMB, file sharing, opening firewalls.."

SMB and file sharing are the same thing FYI. Yes, if you want to share files from another computer, it won't magically read your mind and make it happen, there is definitely some action needed on your end (just like you've to enable media sharing in iTunes and select the albums in iPhoto that you want to share, not including the process of keying in a bunch of numbers to pair the instance of iTunes with the Apple TV). Regarding firewalls, unless you're sharing from outside your own network, something not common at all, you won't have to configure anything. Your firewall is obviously badly misconfigured if you can't share files on your own local network.

"But with XBMC, you gotta work pretty damn hard to browse bad content on Hulu"

Yeah nobody uses XBMC just for Hulu. Especially since it takes hardly a dozen keystrokes and a few clicks in a browser.

KingRoy

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

I find it hard to believe that anyone would opt for any of the MID's available right now in lieu of a netbook. No MID worth its salt in storage fits in the pocket anyway, and a netbook provides unlimited file support, a bigger screen, similar battery life, and way more capabilities above and beyond media playback. Not to mention that the web experience is way better. Can you tell I just traded my Archos for an eee?

Nick

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

Agreed. Go get an Eee 900HA for $325 at Amazon, and you've got an XP machine that can run any media player you want, a 9" screen and a 160GB drive. The battery life is also pretty damn good, so unless you absolutely HAVE to have something without a keyboard, this will beat any MID or even an Archos for price and performance.

patsy

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

Wow ,so is this the apple touch killer,.????will this kill apple touch finally on a global level,.

Shugg

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

No, but there's a chance it will kill the iPod Touch on a global level in the future.

El Taco

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

Wow, Moonspell.

belard

Comments on XBMC caught running on Compal's Jax10 MID

WOW!!

Hah, what about video, does it support MKV & MP4 videos or do you think that video will suffer from lack of sufficient cpu power?
