Lower cost media would sell more players than cheap barely functional players would in my opinion. You don't understand how companies work.  They can do more than one thing at once you know.  A few teams focusing on improving the technology and a few focused on making the tech affordable.  Companies are obviously working on making bluray affordable, you can get a sony bluray player for under $200, not even on sale or anything.
