Samsung's skinny Blu-ray player uncovered
Stop staring at the plastic wrapped photos from our pre-CES tour and have a look at Samsung's totally uncovered 1.5-inch thick Blu-ray player. The BDP4600 is sure to kick off an all new battle of "thin for thin's sake" amongst CE manufacturers, but honestly, given the emphasis on design or complete lack thereof on most Blu-ray hardware so far, this can't come a moment too soon. What does it do? Your guess is as good as ours, until Samsung decides to let loose with the specifications.

She's looking for more girth.
sonicwind @ Jan 6th 2009 12:00PM
When does Samsung skinny model get uncovered?
Flashpoint @ Jan 6th 2009 12:32PM
That's a lovely sweater she's wearing.
But, it would look even better crumpled up at the end of my bed.
konshuss @ Jan 6th 2009 1:51PM
well then after i beat your ass and take her, leaving you crumpled at the end of the bed, you can have her sweater.
JamesM @ Jan 6th 2009 2:03PM
@ konshuss. Then what - are you going to take her back to your cave? Honestly, dude, this is the 21st century - you don't get a woman by beating up the guy she's currently with. But you'll probably learn that in high school.
konshuss @ Jan 6th 2009 3:29PM
it was a mere play on words, good sir. but thanks for the pickup advice, i'll be sure not to DRAG them to my cave.
OneLove @ Jan 6th 2009 11:45AM
That's a nice blu-ray player, but what is she holding?
Meus @ Jan 6th 2009 12:54PM
judging from her expression she doesn't know either, it's more "I get paid for smirkin and I think I'm real good at it"
Boarderwoot @ Jan 6th 2009 1:07PM
more like, "Oh jeeze, they're taking a photo for the Engadget blog. Now I'll be the butt of a bunch of sexist jokes that the teenage gadget nerds feel confident in posting under the cover of complete anonymity. Oh dear, I've thought butt."
BradS @ Jan 6th 2009 2:04PM
She's holding a BluBook Air. It slices and dices, well, cake at least.
Seneca @ Jan 6th 2009 2:28PM
Holding? Why is she pinching it?
Das Boot @ Jan 6th 2009 11:48AM
@RD, She needs to go black then. lol.
She doesnt seem to happy by the thinness.
Jonyah @ Jan 6th 2009 11:51AM
i guess this isn't a component that you could stack another component on top of.
lltaeho @ Jan 6th 2009 3:03PM
actually, its the kind you stack on top of other electronics
IanH @ Jan 6th 2009 11:53AM
Screw the bluray player, I'll take the girl! O_O
BradS @ Jan 6th 2009 2:02PM
Something wrong with you? Screw the girl, screwing the Bluray player just sounds painful.
ProfessorKaos @ Jan 6th 2009 2:23PM
Samsung always have nice women on their ads, makes you wish you were there huh? :))))))))
Chad @ Jan 6th 2009 11:55AM
Where is the uncovering?
Satch @ Jan 6th 2009 11:58AM
I want one. What's the article about?
iEye @ Jan 6th 2009 12:00PM
Why not use the Apple TV instead? It's thin and offers HD video a whole lot cheaper!
superhobo @ Jan 6th 2009 12:08PM
What part of Bluray pla...oh screw it.
David S @ Jan 6th 2009 12:22PM
Compression is great for your 128mb Rio mp3 player.
Not so great on HD video.
cj @ Jan 6th 2009 12:28PM
Just 'cuz apple doesn't use Blu-ray doesn't make it useless.
Andrew @ Jan 6th 2009 1:57PM
Sure, if she's delivering it personally, I'll take Apple TV instead.
superhobo @ Jan 6th 2009 12:05PM
I think its just a squashed PS3.
Adoniteking @ Jan 6th 2009 1:06PM
I lol'ed...+1
Richard Glitter @ Jan 6th 2009 12:14PM
glossy shiny top with rounded edges = fail. this is supposed to be a home theater component, and you cant even put something on top of it? and it will collect dust like nobody's business. yech
Jonathan @ Jan 6th 2009 12:12PM
I wasn't aware we were racing to see who could make the thinnest Blu-ray..???
ChiWax @ Jan 6th 2009 12:27PM
What's with the top of that player? It looks like a scanner. I do think getting Blu-ray players smaller is a good thing for the adoption of Blu. My Sony player is almost as big as my 15 year old Sony stereo components. Q.
Ogo @ Jan 6th 2009 12:35PM
"The BDP4600 is sure to kick off an all new battle of "thin for thin's sake" amongst CE manufacturers" ???
Since when Engadget have "the people" not wanted smaller, slimmer and faster?
1. Technology should be always getting smaller and more compact.
2. If LCD, OLED tvs are becoming 0.5-2" thick, most people would want to compliment a nice fancy tv with a small blu-ray player opposed to one the size of an old vcr.
Steve @ Jan 6th 2009 12:45PM
never did understand why blu-ray/dvd player come out that size, i mean really sure they have a bit more in that you get with a pc bluray player. but not to size of vcr players. and its not like its a form factor that you wanna keep. like stereos in cars. I never made any sense to me
ST @ Jan 6th 2009 12:48PM
They need to stop putting hot chicks in these ads with wedding rings on.
I would buy more 1.5" Blu-ray players if I knew I had a chance with the girl in the ad.
Wait...who am I kidding?
Barbaric @ Jan 6th 2009 4:09PM
Way to get everyone to scroll up. And soon to follow are "dude, you're looking at her hand?" comments.
Why does it always have to be Asian chicks showing the tech wares? What ever happened to the blond bikini models from the car shows?
Frederik @ Jan 6th 2009 1:01PM
Can't get any skinner than this.
Shadeslayer @ Jan 6th 2009 1:05PM
Everythings moving to size 0.......even gadgets
looks cool BTW
Jake @ Jan 6th 2009 1:25PM
With space in the entertainment cabinet increasingly at a premium with all of the gadgets, a thinner BR player might be worth the money. Especially if you also have the DVR, game console(s), a VCR, audio equipment, George Foreman grillin' machine, etc. in there.
WM219 @ Jan 6th 2009 1:42PM
Do you need a George Foreman grill and a PS3 in the same cabinet?
BradS @ Jan 6th 2009 2:07PM
They produce the same level of heat.
Roger Choi @ Jan 6th 2009 1:44PM
If they can sell it for $150~$200, it'll sell.
cFoo @ Jan 6th 2009 4:05PM
Come on...she's worth at least $500.
nicolae @ Jan 6th 2009 1:40PM
Clock the ring finger jackasses-you're talkin' about someone's girl.
simon @ Jan 6th 2009 3:29PM
is it just me? it's thinner, but the overall size is much bigger than regular size bluray player or dvd player.
how are you going to fit that beast into the regular A/V shelf ?
is that a real picture of the player?
STINK @ Jan 6th 2009 3:14PM
"Yeah, I'm posing with your waffle iron here. Do I get paid now?"
Patriks7 @ Jan 6th 2009 4:05PM
I gotta say, Samsumg makes some sexy products..
I have a beautiful 26" monitor right next to me.. It looks even better than the Apple ones (coming from a Mac fanboy!)
And all the other countless Samsung things I have in my house look awesome as well!
Now on to that girl..
Wish I had her next to me..
fred @ Jan 9th 2009 4:48PM
clearly shes unimpressed by 1.5 inches
sumsika @ Jan 9th 2009 10:31PM
