HP's Mini 1000 Mi up for order

That magical "Mi" shell for Ubuntu that HP's built for its new Mini 1000 netbooks is now available for order (as rumored), with configurations starting at $330 for the 9-inch version. Since it's a custom build, it'll take about nine days to ship, but the gift of commercialized open source is forever. The Mi UI does indeed seem like the best yet for this form factor and i's likely uses. It's like a smarter, sexier version of the Aspire One's Linpus system. Personally, I'd like to see someone rig up a UI like this with XP as the guts - nothing against linux, but I do have a few legacy XP apps that I'd like to use.

(And while I'm on the subject of quibbles with this machine, rework the mouse buttons already! And no more proprietary add-on drives - who buys these silly things? Ok I'm done.)

Since there are two other HP Mini's on the table with that one, I think this particular photo is from Engadgets initial coverage of the Mini 1000 launch.

Still, it'd be pretty sad if they kept the Windows flag on the keyboard...xD

i imagine its for the soles that decide the Mi isnt for them, and revert back to windows. plus if you Ubuntu + compiz, the windows key is used for certain functionality with regards to compiz. so while it may not look normal with a linux build, it still has its uses.

I hope the ssd uses a standard sata connection to be upgraded, also no way in hell id pay 75 dollars for 2gb of HP ram. 3Cell battery = fail where is the 6 cell?

It's a "lithium polymer" 3-cell, which might not be as bad as you think. That's the tech they put in the really long running (6-8 hour, I think) eeepc's, which also have a 10" screen and I believe are only 2-cell. I'd wait for a review before I go too excited, but this might be longer running (and lighter) than a 6-cell li-ion.

UGH. This is so frickin' asinine. Aside from making the computer FAR less useful, not having a command line is going to make upgrading the SSD harder. I was going to buy the RunCore SSD with mini-usb and just run a "dd" command to replicate the slooooow stock SSD and slap it in there. Now I don't know what I can do to clone it.

The real question is, if the command line is disabled, are we stuck with some piss-poor application installer that only allows HP-approved apps to be installed? That's not a computer, that's a frickin' iPhone. What about apps on thumbdrives/sd cards? If I throw XTerm on one, can I launch it? Or will the entire filesystem be hidden from me as well? What about SSH?

I assume someone will find a workaround, but it's pathetic that it's even an issue. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT, HP. (Guess I shouldn't be surprised.)

Still, surely there's a .deb handler - Grab a simple, self-contained terminal like eTerm and I'm sure you can fix this intentional bug in a matter of minutes.
