What kind of emails exactly are you reading that require that kind of bandwidth? Pulling up weather, radar maps can be very slow as well.  I personally use blackberries for much more than just email. Also, 3G enables simultaneous voice and data as does wi-fi but is available in broader areas than wi-fi.  So I can talk while tethering or send a file during a call.
