My Pearl did this very same thing on a recent trip to Florida. I mean 8900 is just a slightly thinner bold seemingly, and personally I think the bold looks better.  Screen Resolution is the same.  I wouldn't be surprised if the software is perfectly compatible, meaning I could go download the os from AT&T site and load it in a 8900.  Don't know about that At&t logo on the back though.
