Archos 10 netbook sits down for a photo shoot

The Archos 10 netbook was loosed into the crowds early this morning, and already Laptop has a hands-on up. Comically enough, this 10-inch machine is actually the largest product ever launched by the company, as it generally focuses on handheld PMPs and the like. Specs wise, it's about as vanilla as they come, and design wise, it's overwhelmingly simple. Considering Archos' abysmal product support (Yo Archos, where's the TVPortation plugin, you jerks!), I wouldn't get near their new foray into netbook world. The fact that this Archos 10 is so painfully mediocre makes the point.

Well, they got the postion of the trackpad buttons right (are you listening Acer?). Now all the have to do is lose the lame, 'tarded stickers that mar an otherwise nice product.

I think that you are contractually obligated to have those Intel and Microsoft stickers on a laptop if you want to be able to ship it with their processor and OS. Though the customer can usually easily just peel them off.

It'd also be horribly expensive and it'd fall apart after six months - and that's if they don't try another one of these 'plugin' models like they have with their media players.

'want to use wifi? sure, just enable it with this €15 add-on'

Okay, so it might not be *that* ridiculous, but it's the main reason I didn't buy Archos again when upgrading from a 404.

Who would buy this over a ASUS or Acer or anything else that's on the market now?

In what way does this capitalize on Archos' areas of technical and marketing strength?

In what way does it help them in their core market segment?

Why bother entering a crowded market with a commoditized item and miniscule profit margin?

(unless Archos is totally broke and is trying to garner some investment from cash flush Chinese computer companies)

This is exactly what I was thinking. I am wondering if this is what an earlier post postulated, a rebranded product of another company. If thats the case, maybe they are looking for the quick buck and are really at work on an original, unique product? Ugh, probably not.

Who needs this? Just about 15 million people last year, and probably around 50 million people this year. The smaller, cheaper, lower power laptop segment is booming, and anyone who isn't in this market is fooling themselves.

Why should Acer and Asus own the whole bulk of that new 50 million sales per year market?

Looks very nice. No complaints other than the fact that the loaded software is crap...

I don't have a laptop ATM, saving up for a (freakin' expensive) MacBook Pro... so would like something to hold me off and take notes in college class... its very intriguing at this price...
But yeah- definitely going with a brand I trust and not this crap.

If you follow the instructions in that Wired video, you can probably install OSX on this Archos 10 laptop if that's the X86 OS that you prefer.
