Really? Paying money to pirate games is the only thing separating us from the apes? Modchips have absolutely no purpose besides piracy, since running homebrew code doesn't require any modding at all. And the whole "backups" argument is bullshit, as these days "backups" is just a thinly veiled codeword for warez. Remember kids, piracy is a no-no. If you want those game developers to keep making games, BUY THEM! Why would you pay money to a company so that you can rip off game developers? If you like a game enough to pirate it, then buy it and show the developers that they're doing something right.

On the other hand, it would be nice for the Wii to get game demos, because otherwise there's no way of telling whether you like a game before you buy it. So what you're saying is that there's never any reason that a disc should become damaged, either because it was dropped or mishandled by a child playing one of these games (and since they're marketed towards young children, that risk is very real).

Or even worse - that a disc becomes lost or misplaced, you should have to buy a second copy. You know, because when you bought the game, you weren't paying for the development of it or the right to play it, rather, just for the physical disc created, which is why they can't offer you a replacement at a small fee if you've got proof of ownership.

Face it - the game and console developers are very much in the wrong by punishing video game owners in not allowing them to create backups. It preserves their revenue stream at the cost of these users, who are ironically the ones providing them their income. They'll instead punish them by forcing them to buy second copies of lost or damaged games (and as evidenced by Microsoft, there are examples where it's known by the developer that the console itself might harm the game without user intervention) instead of just providing them with either a replacement service (not hard to prove you own a game, either by providing a receipt or other materials) or a means to back up.
