I only go there to torment the staff) playing with the netbooks they had out: 9" Acer, HP and eee. The Acer had the best keyboard of the bunch but worst screen.. washed out and fuzzy. The HP had a lovely screen but really crap keys. The eee sorta fit in the middle. Performance on all was about the same (they were running XP).

If you're willing to accept the compromises for the portability, none are awful machines, esp with something snappier under the hood (xubuntu on my 7" eee is quite responsive).

But when you get to 10", you approach "real computer" size and I'm not sure the compromises are so acceptable, then.

gyffes

Comments on The 10-inch Acer Aspire One takes some beauty shots

Well, hopefully this will have a better screen. I went to Best Buy several months ago, and compared the netbooks, and I know what you mean. You would think that they all have very similar screens, but it really isn't true. Even though both of them are matte, one of the netbook's screens was much worse than the others. It was very stark. Unfortunately I don't remember specifically if it was the Acer with the worse screen, but if y'all go to your local Best Buy and check it out, the difference is very noticeable.

0megapart!cle

Comments on The 10-inch Acer Aspire One takes some beauty shots

I expect, if we did a serious study, our opinions about "the best netbook on the market" would often correspond with the laptop or desktop machine we are most used to.

I find the keys on the HP 2133 far superior to those on the Acer and the eee. I got a netbook as a companion to my larger laptop (which itself was only 14") to grab and go when I needed something miniscule. The 10" form factor may not be much larger than the 8.9", but then again, neither is my 14" laptop at my desk. Netbooks aren't designed to be primary work systems, just great complements. Keep mine small.

Although I think the Acer's screen is on par with the HP and eee. I've had mine for almost a week and the screen brightness and clarity are astounding to me at least. Video was kind of flakey from the get go, but I thought it was most likely a driver issue. By the time I realized it was hardware it was out of Staples very short return period so I had to deal with Acer. Even though the unit was well less than 30days old they would not cross ship a new or refurbished unit even with a credit card, and the folks in tech support were clueless and unable to do anything even slightly outside the lines. I finally got a manager to give me fedex overnight on the shipping back to me. I had set the machine up to dualboot xp/ubuntu which was a royal pain, but I had it all sorted out and working pretty well with Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Anyhow - Sent the machine in, it took them close to 10 days to repair it and then shipped it back fedex ground even though I called to doublecheck that it would indeed be coming back overnight. When I received it the repair slip says they replaced the mainboard and the LCD. Seems to me it would have been cheaper to swap it out with a new unit. They had also forgotten to snap the bezel around theLCD back into place. I got the bezel back in and it appears that they installed a different rev of the LCD which is MUCH sharper and better looking than the original or the ones on display in the store. I'm happy with that, but they had also reimaged the hard drive for no aparrent reason and now Ubuntu is gone. Bah. I certainly dont think I will be buying another Acer product. This is the first non Apple computer I have bought in 15 years. I've gotten spoiled.

liamlunchtray

Comments on The 10-inch Acer Aspire One takes some beauty shots

I don't own an Aspire one, but it sounds like one of one-in-a-few million things cause I haven't heard of anything like that happening.

finnith

Comments on The 10-inch Acer Aspire One takes some beauty shots

Being in the industry I can't say much good for Acer and their products over the last 10 years....but ...
