And Apple computers are the ones widely used for video production (Final Cut), so they can't just ditch Firewire until all cameras out there will do (and it won't happen anytime soon).

Old Mio GPS with similar OS (Windows Embedded CE 4.0), .NET et all was hacked by transferring the update to a device, and changing the updated files to custom ones. It starts out talking to momentolive.com on port 1066 using what looks like a binary protocol. A cert goes over the wire early on, which probably means there's some security around getting firmware on the device this way.

It then polls http://securesync.momentolive.com/poll.sync (User-Agent: alp.sync.client.1.0) -- alp = a living picture?.

If you plug in a usb cable, it comes up as a device with vid 0e20 pid 0200, don't know what that's about.

I'm hanging on to the email nonetheless and after March if it stops working someone has some explaining to do.

That web site really requires ZERO maintenance. The picture hosting does requrie space, but I have no issues with getting rid of that.

Just pare down the web site to configure RSS feeds, or send out a firmware update to the frames to allow RSS configuration independent of the momentolive portal.

Given my non-tech savvy parents, it's ability to pick up an RSS feed from FrameChannel was the main selling point for me - without this, it's suddenly going to lose much of it's worth.

I can authenticate frames, send them pictures, even send them the same rss feed types that the momento site supported previously.

I'm going to add gallery.me.com support next, if I can. This remains so far a DIY project since the frames poll the site far too frequently for me to be able to safely say use my replacement on my server.

To do this properly requires more hardware co-located than I can offer, and fronted by a layer 7 switch.
