PC Gaming is important, that is where the evolution of Gaming takes place, that is where all the graphic processors get researched, that is where rendering technology happens. Consoles is just a port out of PC, a slimmer model, something that gets older every day, no updates, nothing over a period of 5 years.

having several friends bring over computers and monitors is rather unwieldy, whereas i when i have people over we can watch a movie, then break out rock band, then play some halo 3 on my tv.

Plus, what relevancy is it that you can't have people over to play PC games? I have a PS3, a desktop and a laptop. The first I use for Rock Band and explicitly offline multiplayer stuff, and the other two we can gather round and watch youtube, take turns on peggle or have two people playing an online game like WoW or Gears co-op.

PC gaming is not becoming increasingly irrelevant, it's just (sadly) moving away from masssive, triple-A game releases.
