I have high hopes for this format, as I look to migrate onward from the current superzoom offerings (have an S3 IS, sitting out the S5 IS round)... but not willing to lug a flapping-mirror box around. Glad to see further hats in the ring.

I've grown weary of the noise and chromatic in the superzoom images, not to mention the silly pixel race in general. When will we see SNR featured as prominently as pixel counts in camera marketing? It's a bigger-is-better number too, so why can't we have a performance race around it instead of pixels?

EddyKilowatt

Comments on Two Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras rumored for soonish release

These 4/3rds are a very tricky thing. In fact, the idea of a P&S system camera is awesome. But really I'd only pay more for the body or the kit. I wouldn't be happy if the lenses cost more though, as it is a smaller format, and so the glass shouldn't be as difficult to manufacture.

These are meant to compete with entry-level DSLR's. It's not full frame--heck, it's not even APS-C--so it's not meant to compete with the mid- to high-end DSLR's. But ever since Canon and Sony neutered their high-end P&S cameras to promote their entry-level DSLR some two or three years back, the small-body large-sensor market has been completely neglected. On the other hand, 4/3's or APS-C in a pocket size camera is desperately needed by most every serious photographer. This has proven problematic for digital rangefinder cameras, because of the short mounting distance. The M8 has a 1.3 crop sensor. That's as close as Leica could manage to full frame. It took Pansonic a good long time of making overly noisy sensors processors to finally figure out how to do well. The review of the Panasonic G1 on dpreview looks pretty encouraging from an image quality standpoint. Their verdict was the G1 is about on par with the Canon Rebel XSi at all but the highest ISO setting. Like others here have mentioned though, the G1 seems to imitate an SLR shape when the micro 4/3 format seems ideally suited to the more rangefinder-like shape presented here. I've had plenty of big SLR outfits over the years and while they're fine if you're not moving around too much, it is no fun lugging around a big camera bag on vacation. If the image quality is there, then put me on the list as very interested!

msatlas
