They are the worst IP I have ever dealt with.

@Neosim - Even with Tayklor getting the math incorrect, they still throttle connection speeds. They make money on hoping that their users will ignore the persistent issues or by merely hoping that they are just dumb enough not to notice. Seriously, the only people I know who do not have a bad opinion of Charter are the 40+ year-olds who aren't technologically savvy. They just pay their bills and move on.

Just so everyone knows, if you have charter, you can usually get about a 50% reduction in your monthly rate just by calling and threatening to cancel. I am currently paying $15 for 5 Mb. I think I get what I pay for though, the signal is never steady and I live 10 miles from downtown STL. It always seems to be worse at the end of the month, we don't have cable and watch Hulu all the time. I think they are capping us without letting us know. I've got them and couldn't be happier with my connection speeds. Using bittorrent on popular files I get sustained download speeds in excess of 1.2 Megabytes per second (9.6 Mb/s), and uploads in exess of 300 kilobytes per second (2.5 Mb/s). I pay $59.99 for internet, $1 for basic cable, and about $6 in taxes and fees per month for an advertised speed of 8 Mb/s down (16 with "powerboost") and 768 Kb/s up (1.53 Mb/s with "powerboost"). I suspect that it is because very few people in my neighborhood have internet service through Comcast.

SirisC

Comments on

srsly, whats taking Verizon so long to roll out fios in my hood???

bangladeshiluv

Comments on

Maybe Verizon is still milking a bunch of dumb businesses with monthly T1 rates in your area, and Verizon has no financial reason to advertise a new better service that they'll make less money on.

It may not be the real reason, but I'd wager it's something discussed behind closed doors at Verizon.

M

Comments on

The primary problem isn't Verizon. Believe me, they would love to roll out more communities with FIOS (I'm assuming you live someplace where there is a sufficient market for them to enter) but in fact most towns have the right to grant charters to these companies (except for phone) to bring services in. In Massachuesetts where I live the towns were gouging Verizon for crazy additional items prior to granting the permits (i.e. build us a high-school football field). Verizon finally got fed up and said they weren't doing more communities until this got cleaned up. For instance our neighborhood had FIOS for phone/internet, but the town wouldn't grant them TV privileges for almost 2 years after getting fiber wired around (my house had FIOS for phone/internet and comcast (hurl!) for cable. I was very happy the day I pulled out the comcast cable and plugged my cable into the FIOS box..

I get a reliable 20/5mbit connection that pretty much always delivers that bandwidth. And most importantly when I originally wired (unlike the guy comcast sent out), the verizon fiber techs they sent to my house to hook up, didn't balk at a very complex network of carefulyl partitioned gigabit network segments with static and DHCP addressing and complex home theater setup. These guys asked smart questions (and knew how to read my network diagram I have up on my plywood) and got it right. They even knew how to program the Tivo Series 3 cablecards (that was fun with comcast in the beginning).

I have found them to be excellent at customer service, and the price is reasonable considering the bandwidth (for all you europeans, yes your cable/internet may be cheaper, but let's look at tax costs (VAT? Isn't that what you brew beer in?) which subsidize this, when added in I bet the US model is cheaper [someone else can figure this out, I haven't finished my coffee].

henry

Comments on

Yeah, but 4 of their former executives had criminal indictments brought against them (in 2005) for accounting fraud for inflating subscriber numbers, and earlier this week they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Mack Swift

Comments on

Having had Charter High Speed for 9 years now in Riverside , CA (SoCal) area, I dread and look forward to this. I started out way back when with 1meg service at $90/month, and it ran at right around 1meg speeds. Now, nearly a decade later, I have 10meg service that I pay $60/month for, and I barely average 2meg speeds. Unfortunately, where I live it is either dial up or Charter - nothing else.
