There's a reason all decent camcorders are still built with grips they way they are: so you can hold them steady while panning. Point and shoot cameras can barely be held still enough for a decent macro shot, never mind continuously. DSLR's grips do not meet this requirement either, though they aren't as bad.

Now that the DSLR can give you a live view I see no reason why it can not record (capture) that video feed that is being displayed on the screen. Nikon does it, but mind you there is a massive interruption if try to take a digital still. For me I would have designed it to take a simple frame shot from the continuously running video (as an option) with absolutely no interruption to the recorded video - yeah it may not be the best quality but good enough and way better than a couple of seconds of blackness in your recorded video.
