16 GB will most definitely be faster than 2 GB for large applications. Many access times in your computer are measured in how many CPU clock cycles it takes to grab something from memory (be it the CPU Cache, RAM, or your Hard drive).

Its been a while since my Computer Organization class, but I seem to recall that the CPU Cache could be accessed in 1 clock cycle, RAM took about 7-10 clock cycles, and your Hard Drive takes about 180. So, the more of the program you can cram into memory, the faster it will run.

What I think is really amazing about this article is when you take it in conjunction with the new Intel i7 chip that supports triple channel memory. As in, you can have 6 sticks of RAM in a consumer desktop, now when the 32 GB memory sticks become available for the public, you will be able to get 6x32 GB of RAM, that is a total of 192 GB of RAM. Then you also consider that the price of SSDs are falling while capacity is increasing....

Of course, as stated above, in order to take advantage of the 192 GB of RAM you will need a 64 bit operating system. Good points. I'm using the i7 920 currently but you still won't be seeing 192GB of RAM in a consumer desktop being that the motherboards don't support that kind of expansion yet (and of course the ridiculous price all those modules would cost). Many a time have I wanted to shoot the computer when Vista decides I haven't canceled fast enough and ends my 300 tabs in Firefox. Thank GOD for session restore...

I've never had a need (save for Vista being a little B!tch) for more than 2GB of ram, even with today's newest games. 512MB graphics card and 2GB system with my 2.6GHz FSB (full duplex, not half duplex like those intel chips) and a 500GB HDD, and the hard drive is filling fastest of all. I suppose if I wanted to throw money at the problem I could buy more RAM, but I shouldn't have to buy MORE of something when I'm not even using all of what I have. But yes, I am happy that Vista precaches. Just not that it pisses and moans about it when it does. I have 2GB so I can disable my swap file, not so I can be told I'm using 3/4s of it and M$ would like me to buy more. How much memory do you have on your graphics card? How much memory allocation does your machine use for other system resources?

Vista x86 can handle 3gb of memory maximum, this includes any allocation required for your graphics card(s) and other system resources.

IE:

Lets say you have a setup with a 1GB GFX card and 2gb of ram. You will probably see about 1.9gb (or less) of available memory in windows. The system uses 1GB of it's available 3gb for the card, and then probably a hundred mb (give or take depending on the machine) for other system resources.

it seems that you have no idea what you are talking about. Vista 86x might see the 4GB but does not use all 4GB. Microsoft did this because people were moaning and bitching about why does my computer not see my 4GB.

Here is a fact, google it, wiki it, do what ever you want to it. A 32bit OS has a limitation of using no more than 4GB of TOTAL RAM. That means not only your ram but you graphics cards ram, sound card ram, if you have a sound card with ram in it, and anything else that compromises of ram.

So if you have 4GB of ram stuck in your system and you have 1GB of ram from your graphics card, when you go to the properties of any 32bit, you will only see only 3GB of ram.

However if you have a motherboard with more extensive options you can enable the memory extender as an option and when you boot up into the 32bit OS, it will show the 4GB if memory. IBM already has rack units with a custom chipset that can combine up to 4 physical machines to act like 1 physical machine. Each box can support up to 4 quad core Xeons and 128GB of DDR3 ram.
