WinXP runs just fine. The only thing that needs to be "optimized" in regards to any netbook OS IMO is automatically resizing windows to the 600px screen height. Linux is free, so it's an obvious contender.

The disadvantages of Linux are that it doesn't run Windows software and that the interface is shit (or at least patchy - i.e. it's good some of the time but then whoops! an unexpected task requires you to do something humungously complicated). The first isn't a problem on netbooks because they're not your main computer, so you don't need to be able to run every application under the sun. The second is why companies, including Intel, are building simplified Linux distributions for the purpose - and again, because netbooks don't require complex functionality, this is less of a problem.

So there are two reasons why Linux is important on netbooks. First because they are more price-sensitive; second because the disadvantages of Linux are less significant.

And it's not just about disadvantages. Moblin so far achieves 8 second boot on some netbooks and they're aiming for 5 seconds by the official release. How long does XP take to boot?

sam

Comments on Video: Moblin finds a home with the Samsung NC10

I'm disappointed that they didn't include the move networks player in this alpha...
