They save, like everyone else. $300 for a netbook is about a week and a half's take home salary for a person bringing home 6/hour. For a kid or underperforming 20 year-old with a rent-free grasp on their parent's basement, that means it's a week away. For someone struggling to raise a kid on state aid because his community is collapsing and there just simply isn't a way for unskilled labor to earn more than at the local Wal-Mart (Certainly not plugging away under stingy local bosses - don't fool yourself. Locally owned businesses are almost never better equiped to train and pay an employee than a larger firm), they might have to wait a month or two to pull it off, but $300 is still an attainable, realistic goal.

YoYoYo

Comments on ASUS's little netbooks go big-box; Eee PCs expected in Walmart by year's end

Are you kidding?

These Walmart mouth-breathers are the same people who couldn't sock away $40 for a digital TV converter box in the past two years... Walmart actually loses money in order to do this, but what the heck? They're a billion-dollar business, so it's no skin off their back to give stuff away at cost or less for a few months.

Because of this, the small businesses are driven out of business. They can't maintain their payroll, can't match the pricing, and so they fold. The owners and employees, if they wish to stay in town, end up working for Walmart. The town's main street becomes a row of deserted shops.

Then, after about two years, Walmart closes their store and moves out of town, citing the sinking local economy as the reason why (a condition they caused, by the way). They do NOT transfer the local townspeople's jobs to another Walmart; They simply fire them and hire a whole new crop of workers in the next town. The locals are now without jobs, without local shops, and without the economy to rebuild in the wake of Walmart's blitz.

They do this over and over. Town after town. You may be saving money, but the support of Walmart is the support of destroying small towns and suburbs, driving people to unemployment and bankruptcy, and supporting the assault on small business owners.

There's plenty of documentation out there if you choose to look at it, but that's the basis of the complaint against Walmart: Dirty business practices and no regard for the communities they force themselves upon, and then destroy.

I'll shop there when desperate, but considering that the average Walmart customer looks like they consider themselves 'readers' if they glance at the back of a cereal box, I try to avoid the place. The customers are what creeps me out about Walmart. The dregs of humanity roam those aisles.

ZeroCorpse

Comments on ASUS's little netbooks go big-box; Eee PCs expected in Walmart by year's end

xnifex , [ "Yeah I never understood the Wally World hate either" ]

With all due respect, that comment of yours sent shivers through my body. In a nutshell, that may be right, but in the rest of the world, that' not how Walmart works. First, it's a total myth that Mom and Pops close down due to Walmart. They close down because they overcharge for a small selection and don't provide services that differentiate themselves from a cookie-cutter store. Walmart actually BRINGS more business into an area. Did you ever notice that the gross majority of Walmart are not an island unto themselves? They are surrounded by other stores and businesses. Many of them were not there BEFORE Walmart came to town, but after.

In the real world, the issue is that Walmart is not unionized. Unions don't like that because it shows that people CAN be happy working for someone without being unionized (side note, have you ever met a union employee that was happy with their employers?). Unions also look at that large work force, and salivate over the amount of union dues that can be collected.

Long story short, the heads of the Union are usually more greedy than the Companies.

But is greed a bad thing?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWsx1X8PV_A&e

No, but lying and hiding your true motives is.

And your mocking of Walmart shoppers just makes you look like an elitist tool.

Rocketboy

Comments on ASUS's little netbooks go big-box; Eee PCs expected in Walmart by year's end

"I'll shop there when desperate, but considering that the average Walmart customer looks like they consider themselves 'readers' if they glance at the back of a cereal box, I try to avoid the place. ALL pharmacies are full to the brim with generic drugs. (Side note: that's one of the reasons that drugs cost so much before they become generic. The company that spent all the resources has to recoup it's costs, and provide funding for new research. Not so with generic drugs.)
Although Target and Walmart may be selling the same generic drug, Walmart (due to economies of scale) is able to negoiate a lower wholsale cost of that same drug.

ProTip: Have a clue before you degrade big evil corporations. They may not be as evil as you imagine that they are.
