My question implies that I think of DSi as a handheld computer. That's the whole point of having a web cam, music player on DSi, isn't it? Game consoles, including handheld ones, are not open platforms. The only software that runs on them is software authorized by the console manufacturer (99.9% of which is games). There is no voice app. There is no text editor. There is no webcam ap. So no, they're not really all that much like handheld computers. It will run games and a small suite of novelty apps that Nintendo has made specifically for the platform, that's all.

That said, there are a few advantages that such a device has over a netbook. It's smaller, lighter, cheaper, and the battery will last significantly longer. It's also braindead simple to use, which makes it great for children. If you're looking for something that plays games and is portable and little more, then this is your machine. If you're looking for something that will perform traditional PC functions like text editing, webcams, and voice chat you need to stick with a netbook.

Matt

Comments on Nintendo DSi now up for Amazon and GameStop preorder

@Electromodo

Wow.. thanking me for my opinion? I've been wanting to get a DS Lite for a while but wanted to wait and see what the DSi was all about. Then I learned that the DSi had all these features which are a bunch of space wasters, but what it does offer that no other DS does is a built in camera and an SD slot. You can download things online too, so what does that mean? Security holes ;)

So much so that I'm willing to bet that within the first month of the DSi's release, someone will break through the DSi's security and allow anyone with an SD card to upload emulators etc.. Why did I mention the camera as a cool thing? Gesture recognition homebrew fun =P So being that the screen is bigger, the battery lasts longer, it's brighter, sleeker, and has potential for hacking without the need of special ROM cartridges, then yes, I am kinda excited for it. I'm excited to play cooking mama 3, horsez 2, and brain age 3.... OK.. Maybe I'll just invest into a PSP and hack that one out for the same price since I already have a DS =P

Swoosh

Comments on Nintendo DSi now up for Amazon and GameStop preorder

Not being able to migrate Pokémon is kind of a big phail...
