They told me they'll have more 1000HE next week. Previously I've owned a 15" Sony VGN-N320E, and this is my first netbook so I don't know how it compares to other netbooks but here my impression of it in the last 24 hours.

Pro:
* Beautiful screen - good shapness, contrast, color, and brightness.
* Much faster than expected - I can run eMule and Yahoo Messenger in the background and watch HD streaming TV program from Fox's website. Who says netbooks can only run one application at a time?
* Great for Skype - I use this program a lot, and the speakers/mic on 1000HE are very good.
* Only a few trial/junk softwares that need to be removed, unlike my previous Sony.

Con:
* Fan noise range from virtually silent to fairly noticeable depending on the work load, but then it's kind of expected from such a compact case. In comparison, my previous 15" Sony is consistently low on noise regardless of the work load.
* Fingerprint magnet - This again is no surprise since mine comes in high gloss black.

Frankly my expectation was really low when I shopped for netbooks for the first time, but after I fine tune (according to BlackViper and my own experience) the 1000HE, I think this netbook is a terrific bargain. By the way, I've already upgraded mine to 2GB of RAM, after you physically inserted the RAM you need to retart, press F2 then F10 in order for the 1000HE to recognize it.

Hope this helps.

mark lee

Comments on ASUS begins shipping ultra-longevous Eee PC 1000HE

Oh, a netbook that you can watch a movie then do some browsing, check your e-mail, listen to some music, play a game or two..

RickyRick

Comments on ASUS begins shipping ultra-longevous Eee PC 1000HE

Yes, I really love this netbook!! I still have my 1000H. This is a nice upgrade but I'll wait for the larger screen models and the better design. This is a minimal upgrade for me. It's super-portable (EASILY fits in your bookbag if you're a student), light, and has 9.5 hours (ok, realistically probably more like 7.5) of battery life, and it's cheap. And the screen looks about 9000x better than any screen you'll find on a $400 full-size laptop-it's LED backlit and looks fantastic.

I've bought everything from a 17" desktop replacement laptop (for my brother, who then proceeded to whine nonstop about lugging it to the library it until I helped him buy a replacement 13" Vaio SR), a 15.4" widescreen standard laptop, a 14" widescreen laptop, and the 1000H.

By FAR I like the 1000H the most for actually taking it with me. Even the 14" laptop only got brought to school/library maybe once a week, because by the time I had put it in it's protective sleeve and brought along the charger my bookbag either weighed twice as much or was now packed so full it would barely close because you're then trying to shove a laptop into a space filled with textbooks.

Every single person in my medical school class who's bought one loves their netbook (happy to say that I was the first person-and literally had almost everyone who saw me using ask me all about it-and I'd say 25% of those people ended up buying one).

If you don't need to actually bring your laptop places then the netbook isn't for you, but for people who need to bring it everywhere and use it for hours at a time for academic (or surfing) type stuff I'd say it's like the difference between going from bringing a CD wallet full of mix CDs you burned and a CD player with you to the library and bringing an ipod. The change in convenience is seriously that much.

Also, the super small footprint is a huge bonus when you're trying to put your laptop on one of those flip-over style lecture hall writing areas. When there's extra space you can put your notes on one and your netbook perfectly on the other without worrying about your 15.4" laptop teetering and falling down or whatever. Heck, there's even extra space left to put your coffee somewhere.

Honestly the battery life and the size put together with useful levels of processing power makes it exactly what millions and millions of people have wanted for years. The fact that they also start in the $200's just means those people can actually go and buy it to rave.

tekd

Comments on ASUS begins shipping ultra-longevous Eee PC 1000HE

Inexpensive full blow laptops don't have the battery life these do.
