I'm sure that in some ways they improved on the design. Still, in my opinion, this is a derivative computer. Take a look at photos of both (with a dash of the new MacBooks thrown in) and let me know if you can't see my point.

No doubt, but I think MSI was aiming to lift from Apple, not whomever Apple stole their looks from. I also don't by your specs vs. aesthetics point, I think that Voodoo, Dell, and others have demonstrated this point. This is simply a lazy effort. It could be a result of a typical corporate strategic meeting. What seems popular, shows growth? Buy a dozen and try to make a similar product. Everybody does it to some extent. Ford, (and I'm sure others) reverse engineered Toyotas for ages to try to improve their own cars.
