I've been waiting for this since netbooks came around. My philosophy is if it's not small enough to fit in your pocket and you have to carry around a backpack, you might as well carry around a full sized laptop. So, midsized devices like netbooks or even the VAIO P are kind of pointless - u have to carry it around like a laptop, but it's not powerful enough to be one. This is basically a smartphone running Windows XP/Vista, which is awesome. Next step - eliminate Windows Mobile altogether and just have smart devices run PC OSs :P Give the new Toshiba TG01 a keyboard a bigger battery and have it running a PC OS (I mean, it has a 1GHz processor, why not) and there you go.

AmyFan

Comments on UMID M1 gets official, handled on video

Yeah, the difference being a 10-11" netbook actually has a near-full size keyboard... The OQO 2+ is a bit more pocketable - even though it has a 5" screen (0.2" bigger), it doesnt have all that space on the sides. Plus it has a nice touchpad, so you have the option of using a mouse + it has a slideout keyboard, which I think is the better choice. The advantage that this has over the OQO 2+ is the amazing 1024x600 screen. The OQO 2+ only has WVGA 800x480 screen, so... But I'd still go with the OQO 2+ :P

AmyFan

Comments on UMID M1 gets official, handled on video

I like the overall form factor of the OQO much better but I dont know if it makes up for the price difference. I really didn't include the price in the equation. You're right about the Viliv S5 - I like it, if they had only included a slideout keyboard and fitted the buttons on the sides on the keyboard, they would have made the device more pocketable and more PC-like. And how much of an additional cost would a simple keyboard add... Touchscreen keyboards are a waste of resolution IMO and uncomfortable, so they could have improved the design without adding additional pricing. But I would definitely agree that the Viliv S5 delivers a lot more bang for buck. Also about the OQO 2+ - I'm still a bit skeptical about OLED displays, they haven't perfected the technology enough yet to the point where the blue ones don't start decaying after a few years, so they should probably do that first before mainstreaming OLED displays, not to mention that's definitely what's inflating the price...

AmyFan

Comments on UMID M1 gets official, handled on video

I can't wait to run OSX on this.

Still, I guess under OSX I won't be able to use the TV tuner, WiMax connection etc. etc.

Jesus - this thing may well be the future. As far as I know there are no mobile phones that can do that. Everything else is a bonus - browsing, windows based software, full featured Powerpoint and Word. Combine it with a pico projector and I'm all set for sales presentations, and a life on the road. If I need a larger key-board for serious typing I could use one of those foldable ones, and still be around 700 grams for the whole kit, including the projector.

gadgety

Comments on UMID M1 gets official, handled on video

they should make the whole top half a screen instead of havin all that extra space, put the speakers on the hinge or something, then maybe it wouldnt be to bad

FILA
