The interview was funny and eReaders are not for everyone. Also to say the K1 "sold out" is like saying Barry Bonds is the true HR king. The eInk screens were in short supply towards the end of '07. Amazon couldn't fulfill orders b/c it didn't have enough screens. Sony had the same issue. K1s were hard to come by, but not necessary because of demand. Then Amazon screwed up the K2 launch which was suppose to be last Sept. So from Sept to Feb 22 Kindles were hard to get b/c Amazon stopped shipping them, not because they couldn't make them fast enough.

Fast forward to today. You can order a K2 and have it tomorrow. So much for their being a pent up demand. This isn't to knock the K2. As said, I have one on order. But it's not the "must have" product of any year in the past or foreseeable future. This is different than say an MP3 player. It's still OK to read a plain old book on the subway. Blowhard? O.K., fine.

I agree that there were reasons beyond demand that the Kindle sold out, but reasonable estimates placed first-year sales around 250,000 and the Sony Readers, which suffered the same shortage of e-ink panels, didn't have any similar trouble keeping pace with demand (as far as I'm aware). It's too early to call the Kindle a complete success, but calling it a failure is already absurd in light of that.

Whatever, I shouldn't be surprised - breakthrough products are always hated on until everyone can afford them (although really successful products continue to draw sour comments well beyond that point).

EJ

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

KINDLE is FAIL.

MrViklund

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

Riiight, something that was pretty much sold out completely for it's first year of release is a huge failure.

EJ

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

what about when politicians completely sell out in their first year?

AMiSH PiRATE

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

I don't know if you will read this... But anyway. Here it is.

Wow... You don't understand what this is about. I'm too tired right now to write to much about it but the Kindle is a FAIL product. E-readers may not be. They will not replace paper or books but they will have their place. It's how the Kindle is built as a product that will kill it. It's a Geek-toy. And it probably will stay that way. If you buy a Kindle, you are cool! Almost veryone in the Tech-space, podcasting, blogosphere has one. OMG no wonder... Are they all that ... stupid??

All well. If I have come this far I can lay out my arguments against the Kindle and why it will self die soon. Of course, it can selfsustain, but only within the Wall garden that Amazon has set up.

The Kindle. One E-reader. One Device, one manufacturer, one model, one company, one book-store. What happens if I want to give away my book? What happens if I want to sell it to someone else? What is the second hand value of a Amazon-book? How do I read amazon-kindle books on another E-reader? How do O buy from another store? Why can't I read other documents on this thing? THAT'S WHY IT IS FAIL! It's jsut as stupid as buying DRM:ed music on iTunes when they had it before, or buying games on Steam. Ohh great! Now you are for ever locked into the Steam community and you can only play the game when and if we want. And if our service goes out you can't play the game and you can't sell the game or give it away and you can't transfere it to someone elses Steam account and you can't transfer it to some other competing service... You see the problem? I do. I would never buy a kindle in it's current state. First, slash the price to 100 or 50 dollar. And change the model, create an ecosystem, not a Wall Garden! I'm not that gullible. This is a problem. And there won't be a mass market for any e-reader device before they sort this problem out. And if you already have a book, should you not be able to get it for free on the Kindle? Do you have to pay twice just because I consume it on another device? And. If you think a bit, the number of unites they have sold, is not allot. not allot by a long shot. It may sound allot, but it really isn't. When they have sold 50 million unites, they have sold allot. This is like fart in space. Also, they can make 100 unites, and sell those. That means they have sold out. It's to simplify things, but "Sold Out" means nothing! Nothing! it only means that they have sold out. It means nothing else!

Finally. For most people that is outrageous. That's the perspective Jon Stewart was coming from. You can buy the average book anywhere from $10-$25 dollars meaning it would take quite a few books until you even go to the equivalent price of what the Kindle costs, then add on the cost of the books for the Kindle. Yes, people will break even eventually, but at $359, that's far too out of reach for the average consumer.

Bomchickawahwah

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

Totally agree with Bomchickawahwah and Jon. I am not spending $359 on an ebook reader, its way too expensive. I would rather reduce my credit card debt than get a gadget which does not offer much. I would buy a $360 e-reader in a second if that included books. Even if it was one book a month indefinitely I would consider it but as it stands now, I probably spend on average $10-15 every month on books. It would take me 2 or 3 years just to pay for the reader and that doesn't even take into account the cost of the eBooks.

I like electronic versions of things as much as the next guy but there are just too many other things I would rather spend my money on.

neodorian

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

"We're sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed within the United States." ....... guess what, there are readers here who don't live in the usa.

Adrian

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

As written in a comment further up this page, http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=218392

Muhammad-Oli

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

I think it was more a comment on engadget (huge internationally read site) embedding Hulu videos (US only), than a "Help I can't see this video" cry for help.

Bondtastic

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

http://watch.thecomedynetwork.ca/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart/interviews-a-z/#clip142744

Third time's the charm for my Canadian friends.

Jonathan

Comments on Jeff Bezos chats up the Kindle 2 with Jon Stewart

Bump.
