I have a 701 8G that I am finally upgrading and was hoping one of these newer and smaller cased 10" would do, but I got tired of waiting and picked up a 901 20G for only $250 new after rebate. That has a 6 cell battery, 802.11N and BT and the same resolution screen as all the shipping 10" units, and it is WAY less expensive. I am also going to swap out the SSD with one of the new fast(90/55) 64GB units and this machine should be pretty sweet, and all for about $400

Lauren

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

I got an HP Mini 1000 this weekend and love it! I wanted to look at a Dell Mini 9 but with a 2+ week wait until I'd arrive it from Dell.com when I live 5 minutes from where Dell makes these in Round Rock, TX, I went to Best Buy and saw this thing and fell in love with it. It's a beautifully crafted little machine and feels very solidly constructed. Gets warm quick and the fan pretty much runs nonstop, and the integrated audio sounds like crap, even with quality headphones. I found a driver that may fix this problem, but I'll have to wait till I get home to try it. Anyways, if this thing is close to the HP Mini, which it definitely looks like it, it'll be great.

Casey

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

The best thing about the HP's is they're very thin. Under 1". This Dell is 1.3", e.g. thick for a netbook. I think in a year all these thick netbooks will be dead when the price premium for thin goes away.

The worst thing about the HP is that the thin profile means a 1.8" drive, meaning S-L-O-W. I presume there are options for replacing the drive with an SSD, and that might make the thing quite snappy. I'm waiting for the HD version of the HP, what 2140? which I assume will ship around the same time as Dell's does. Wondering if the 1366x768 screen at 10" will be too squinty though.

If they can get one of these to the point where the multi-touch scrolling is really responsive (e.g. like an iPhone, or a Pre), then maybe the existing x600 (or god, even x576) rez might be more livable.

Fanfoot

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

Meh... Ignoring that the monitor was not very bright, the trackpad had seizure-like responses when I touched it (random magnifying, reducing font to 4 pt, scrolling in a bizarre/jerky motion), it was as heavy as my ThinkPad T42, was thicker than a big mac, and heavy as crap to carry around, it was a near-perfect netbook.

Too many people are focused on battery life at the expense of usability.

You might like it, but I hate the 1000 HE.

mi_sat

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

Were you not able to disable gestures in the mouse control panel? Or simply use the default driver instead?

I find the rest of your claims a bit unbelievable, though. The EeePC 1000HE weighs 1.45kg with battery (compared to 0.99kg for the 9" EeePC models, and the same as all the other 1000Hx models). The Thinkpad T42 weighs 2.6kg. That's a pretty big difference! Enormous, even. The Thinkpad is nearly double the weight.

At its thickest point, it's 3.8cm thick, which is slightly thicker than the T42. The difference is that the T42 is about 3.6cm thick everywhere (or at least half of it, it seems to taper a bit) while the EeePC ranges from 2.9cm tall to 3.6cm thick (it's primarily 3.8cm where the battery extends, and thinner elsewhere). I guess you could consider that too thick, although if you found the T42 to be thin, the EeePC being about the same shouldn't be too thick.

For comparison, my current 17" desktop replacement weighs 3.5kg and is 4.1cm thick.

I can certainly empathize with your complaints over the trackpad, as I used to have a Compal laptop with a pretty iffy trackpad that drove me nuts. Dell went and killed it with the non-user upgradeable ram and the high price for the specs compared to other netbooks... oh, and the battery life isn't great.

My [suggestions] to both companies:
--Asus, redesign the eeepc logo (use a different font and position it better I suppose), or just get rid of the eeepc brand and just use the Asus brand name.
--Dell, make the ram user upgradeable, use Li-Pol batteries instead of Li-Ion (like the 1000he), offer a better price (But I suppose it has to do with manufacturing costs...idk really.)

OKKKK, enough of my rant. It feels nice to let it out... I might just go with the 1000HE and put a neat sticker over it.... or hold out for something better.

rodney.ha

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Steve

Comments on Dell Inspiron Mini 10 gets reviewed

Let's just say you get what you pay for...this is a basic computer to do basic tasks, don't expect too much.
