It will also include FBReader, a web browser, PDF reader, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

There's a couple of reasons the price is so reasonable: one is there will probably be no built-in memory, which is in keeping with previous SmartQ products. All your files are stored on SD cards and swapped out via the card slot. The other is that in order to keep the price down and get this thing out the door, it's quite possible SmartQ is recycling the platform of their previous player, the TAO. If so, the processor will be an ADI Blackfin. Even if the platform is all-new, SmartQ has been a longtime and exclusive ADI customer, so there's no reason to think they'd be switching now. There would also be a Wolfson codec for handling audio if the recycled platform theory is correct.

All in all, a huge leap for the Chinese DAP industry and it will be interesting to see what kind of community develops for the Q5 considering the Linux environment and use of GPL software.

chengdude

Comments on SmartQ 5 gets peeped, for reals

Are you sure they use ADI's blackfin?
