Other movies I don't care if it's DVD, file-based, or streaming. If streaming/downloading saves money on time-waster movies, then I'm cool with that.

Games are a bit different. Discs are handy for borrowing and trading-in. Some games are quite large and I'd rather have them on disc rather than taking up a huge chunk of drive space, plus the time it would take to download. And I worry about what will happen if I want to download a game I had purchased 10 years ago? With proprietary downloads, you don't really own it -- more like you're renting it indefinitely from the publisher.

Regarding UMD specifically: I never expected them to really succeed unless Sony embraced them more fully... meaning they needed to make UMD burners, UMD readers for PC, cameras that burn directly to UMD, music recorders (ala minidisc), etc. It's a great format... tons of space packed on a tiny disc with a protective shroud while remaining cheap to manufacture (yes, it's way cheaper to make a UMD than a 2GB flash drive.

Lars

Comments on

actually i don't know how anyone could tell the difference on a 4 inch screen.. 1080p or 720.. really?

XXVII

Comments on

Wave of the future, Wave of the FUTURE!!!!!!

Roncore

Comments on

Nice Howard Hughes (Aviator) reference, I loved that part of the movie too!

The E

Comments on

BEST AVATAR EVER!
Belmont's QUEST ftw!

I STILL Rip sprites and stuff from it.. and i don't care what people say.. Not to condone piracy, but it's tough to justify playing games on UMDs when running games off the memory stick led to faster load times AND longer battery life, as well as being more convenient. At the time the PSP came out, flash memory was quite a bit more expensive than optical media, so there's justification for selling games on UMD, but that wasn't the case for very long after and I think Sony got burned by it. Releasing movies on the format that would basically only play on a PSP also felt like a cash grab, and I know a few people perceived it as a "fuck you" straight from Sony to the public, something that certainly didn't help the format's image.

Ravnos

Comments on

Did I miss something, like, I dunno, GRAN TURISMO BEING RELEASED FOR THE PSP as shown in the above pic?
