A new rumor from
SmartHouse is making the rounds today, with alleged sources claiming LG has partnered with Apple to make
OLED displays for a
new iPhone and iPod touch, a Taiwan-manufactured netbook that's reportedly already in working prototype stage, and a device with a wafer-thin screen that would link wirelessly to a content-providing box similar to Apple TV. Sure, some of that makes sense, but let's add a good bit of context here. This article in question was written by
SmartHouse veteran David Richards, who in the past has brought us such winners as PlayStation 4 launching in 2008, a Xbox 360 equipped with HD DVD, and our favorite, Apple producing its own soap opera series exclusively for the iPod. We're not saying the Apple-LG partnership is entirely out of the realm of possibility, but this guy doesn't exactly have the best track record. Furthermore, this doesn't jibe with two separate reports from
Dow Jones Newswire and
Commercial Times / DigiTimes that Quanta is providing the screens for an upcoming Apple netbook launching in Q3. Lastly, with today's announcement that LG is licensing
Kodak's OLED technology for future devices, we get the feeling the company isn't the best suited to meet Cupertino's demands. Seems like this week's barrage of Apple news has gotten to people's heads, honestly -- keep a sharp eye!

FIRST APPLE TARDS
yummmmm, those are delicioius.
I think this is just a distraction created by Apple for what's actually in the pipeline.
WTF engadget!!!! This should be tagged BREAKING NEWS!!!!
It's got fruit in the title - where's the breaking news tag???!!!
I thought I typed engadget.com and not tuaw.com, guess I was wrong...
oled here, oled there. oled oled oleds everywhere
They already ordered a million of 10.3 inch capacitive screens a while back... (rolleyes)
Remember that engadget?
@ noneedlessnoise:
First to post, last in life.
@ Phenom:
My Blackberry doesn't get breaking news titles :(
I hate apple and all their gorgeous this and beautiful that, but when that thing comes out if it's under $700 I'll buy it immediately just cause I really want a netbook that can do final cut pro, and yes I know bout the hackintoshes, I did that and I had problem after problem
Stephen, come back to reality, you will not do any FCP on a underpowered netbook with a minuscule screen.
Anyway, there is better option than FCP around, look at Avid or Vegas.
If you are ready to ditch 700$, get a 999$ macbook, it will handle FCP way better than a netbook. Only drawback is Apple have removed the firewire port... should be fine with AVCHD camera though.
Bull.
Now this is what I call news.......
I want that theoretical netbook more each time I see it.
it looks pretty bad to me. be it apple or not.
sans keyboard please!!
Yeah, bull...
Oh and - MOAR APPLE STUFF PLEEEZ!!!1
Out of all of the stuff goping on in the tech world, THIS is what some genius found compelling?
A rumor story?
"Seems like this week's barrage of Apple news has gotten to people's heads, honestly"

These 2 links prove it!
Apple's idea of a net book is going to cost $899...
And be less powerful than the Mac Mini; way less.
Ohh shit, more than that, more like add an extra 0 on to that.
With OLED screen, $1500 at least.
Don't forget the SSD...
But will it blend?
Go fall in a ditch
or a blender
No power button.
Do you have to talk to this one to turn it on too?
Yes, you have to put on a seductive voice to really "turn it on" ;)
somehow incorporate the power button into the clickable track pad.
BAM!
So will it be made in Korea or Taiwan?
LEAVE ASIA ALONE
Fair enough. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
@michas_pi
You're officially the Chris Crocker of Engadget
Playstation 4 in 2008???
what the hell?
I can't wait til this comes to VERIZON!!!
After all this time, TSWB, I still can't figure out if you're a troll or just an idiot.
A million dollars says that it costs a million dollars.
I'll bet you a million a million people will buy it...
x 1,000,000
Bah, we all know Apple is working on a tablet-type machine that works as an iPod, netbook and e-reader all in one.
I also believe this will be the case. Jump on the e-reader bandwagon but with big advertising. Apple sell e-books via itunes - apple goons buy in droves. Amazon make kindle service available on it - immediately propel apple to the top of this sector - goons swear innovation and leadership.
Yawn!
Please stop posting that picture! I keep thinking it's real, and getting all excited (in my pants).
That's kinda sad...
If sony was smart and serious about OLED tech, I think they should beg apple to let them make OLED's for them. Even if they have to take a loss, it will totally help in the long run. They will make a profit eventually, it will advance their OLED tech, and it will help their ability to make OLED displays faster and cheaper.
OLED DISPLAY! People really won't be able to afford this when or if it comes out. Referencing Apple's over price computers.
Whether this article has any truth in it or not, we'll see an OLED iPhone in the next year or two anyway. That's pretty much guaranteed.
I would wager that the majority of cellphones will be OLED over the next few years. They're throw away items, for the most part, so the screen life isn't a big deal, and OLED production seems to be working well enough for small screens.
Sounds like a winner in the Apple Product Cycle:

is a netbook really a netbook if it's made by Apple and cost $1500?
