This DAP is imo more similar to the S9 which is also priced around 200 quid. Sony is going to end up disappointed if they release it at the $299/$399 price point they seem to be leaning towards. The Sony has an excellent (albeit 1/2 inch smaller) OLED screen & Sony's own premium noise-canceling headphones (at least an $80 extra value) and better sound quality. The iPod has Apps & Games along with a huge community of users/developers who will continue to create them. Sony's features are great for a PMP but if they're trying to price match the iPod touch then they're hurting themselves because the Touch has features that hold a much higher value to the typical consumer.

Of course, Sony doesn't care about poor pricing. I hope they at least update the web browser to one that can do flash. Will the OLED display of this Sony be readable outside?? I think this will be a VERY important point!

iPhone and iPod touch are easily readable even in direct sunligth.

My current Sony NWZ-S638 is useless in the sun as I can't read anything on its display :-(
My old vaio pocket hat a reflective display and was easy readable outside.


Any news on this OLED thingy?

Grandpa would also like to know your pricing policy on replacement batteries, Sony. Grandpa has a shaky hand and his eyes aren't the best, so he'd need someone to do the battery replacement surgery for him if he bought a device like this and wanted to use it beyond its disposable life of a few hundred charge cycles. I'm too young and unskilled for that, too.

Grandpa has better things to do in his retirement than worry about what he's gonna do when the battery dies when he's out and about and/or when he charges it a few too many times and it can no longer hold a suitable charge in a couple of years. Grandpa believes throwing a perfectly working device away for another in a constant upgrade-and-throwaway cycle when just the one part dies is very wasteful. Grandpa enjoys old reliable friends. You still have to convince him to replace his trusty Walkman which he uses with his rechargeable AA batteries, which he brings a spare set of wherever he goes and swaps with ease.

Grandpa also wonders why you don't offer removable SD storage, aside from raking big bucks on the different-sized versions, Mr Sony. It would also allow grandpa a cheap drop-in replacement when/if the flash dies through too many writes, and allow grandpa to take advantage of cheap SD prices, which are dirt-cheap right now, and just keep dropping their larger-capacity prices as time goes on. This allows grandpa to stretch his entertainment dollar further and allows grandpa to choose exactly how much storage he needs, and move it about to his laptop, too, if he desires.

Grandpa also thinks your lossless support really needs a modern, space-saving, tag-saving format, like FLAC, Mr Sony. http://flac.sourceforge.net Grandpa laughs at huge, tagless WAV.
