Anyone here bother to look up the FAR's (Federal Aviation Regulation) on testing and certifying aircraft?? Each step of certification has very strict limits. You cant just put together a flying machine and go flying in any way you choose. With everything they have invested there would have been a lot to lose for busting max altitude during phase I of aerodynamic testing. As a pilot I can definitely see the advantage of a roadable aircraft. General aviation pilots do a lot of flying for fun. The biggest detractor is cost. The second is that once you arrive at your destination you must either have a friend with a car or use a taxi. Many small town destinations dont have taxi's or bus service. This would be perfect...until you get into even the smallest finder bender :P

ematt

Comments on

What? I wouldn't expect to see any actual flying cars, driven by actual normal people with just regular driving skills, out in the air around cities and such, for about 50 years.

First of all the technology just isn't there yet. For that I'd say 10 years for a working prototype (if one isn't already in development by somebody) and then another 5-10 to get into the mass market.

Then you have to let the governments work out all the laws, restrictions, regulations, licensing, driver's education, safety, etc. Not to mention some kind of airspace street system and traffic control.

And THEN you have to wait for the price to come down enough so that people might actually be able to afford one.

So yes, it's a guess.
