11.6-inch Acer Aspire One inches closer to our hearts, reality
It's very possible that we're just reading too far between the lines here, but a recent post over at macles* lines up awesomely with specifications gleaned from a recent Acer FCC filing. Basically, what we're probably looking at is a forthcoming Aspire One with an 11.6-inch panel (as opposed to the 10-inch versions available now), a 1,366 x 768 resolution and very strangely placed Ethernet and VGA ports. Furthermore, we're also told that this bugger will house an Atom Z530 CPU, Intel's SCH USW15S chipset (Poulsbo) and GMA500 integrated graphics. Oh, and there's also an extended battery option that should provide up to eight hours of life. Interested yet?

I love my netbook but would be happer with a slighty bigger one for better screen res. For me the selling point is battery life
Count me in as intrigued. We have a 8.9" AA1 at home, and it's great. The only beef I have is that sometimes I wish the screen resolution was higher than 1024x600...this new model solves that issue.
same thing with me.. batt life is important too but not as essential.. AA1 and the small screen sometimes can be daunting to use
Looks better than the Mini 10 and Mini Note 2140. Nice work, Acer.
gee thanks I just happened to buy the 10" aspire one a week ago
As did I, although I'm neither surprised nor disappointed by this "next better thing". I'm very happy with my 10.1 incher! It's the perfect size for portability.
Don't even. I'm talking about the netbook.
currently using as my secondary computer a 4 yr old 14" 1280x768 HP which weighs a damn 6.5 lbs, and want to "upgrade" to something smaller and low cost as my secondary lappy. i've been very interested in netbooks lately and was very tempted by the ASUS 1000HE mainly because of the great keyboard, excellent battery life, and multi-touch trackpad. the main thing that's been holding me back for the past several iterations of netbooks have been the horrible 1024x600 resolution. the more screen real estate the better.
people talking about the fact that a netbook can't be bigger than 9" or 10" don't know what the hell they're talking about. those 9" & 10" netbooks have huge bezels around them. why not put in an 11" or 12" screen on the same sized device? who wouldn't want that?? I think it's mainly been limited to smaller screen sizes because of COST not desire to have a smaller computer. They want to hit the $400 or under price point, so it has more appeal.
i checked out macles blog and according to his site, this aspire one with 11.6" is going to be 11.2"x7.7"x1.02" & 2.76 lbs. For reference the 10.1" aspire one is 10.2"x7.3"x1.33" & 2.60 lbs. that's both with the standard battery on each which is 4 hrs on the 11.6" and 3 hrs on the 10.1".
not a huge difference. i appreciate the extra width for the full size keyboard, the extra heft is negligible considering it's also going to be thinner and incorporate a larger screen.
now i'm not sure if i'll get this or wait til asus comes out with an 11.6" eee netbook.
my current ideal netbook given recent specifications: 11.6" LED screen w/ 1366x768 resolution, 9.5 hr battery w/ 3.5 lbs or less weight, hardware decoding for H264 720p sources, full size chiclet-style keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, upgradeable to 2 GB or more of RAM, 160GB or bigger hard drive, bluetooth, 802.11n (5 ghz spectrum), HDMI & VGA port, 1.1" thickness or less.
I think that ideal netbook, which is basically a 1000HE with an upgraded screen, graphics, peripherals etc. is waaaaay more than doable. Get on it ASUS!!!
Except that the 10" Aspire had already pushed out both the width and depth compared to the 8.9" model, so this latest 11" version is more notebook than netbook in my mind. But no one should have any complaints. Options are a good thing.
No 3G module? thanks but no thanks.
No. It doesn't have NVidia graphics.
12 inch screen? That's not a netbook. It's just a crappy laptop.
The size is perfect. I've been waiting for something that was the similar in size as a vaio tt/tx/tz, but didnt cost a arm and a leg.
Color me as interested, as long as I can use the battery packs that I already bought for my Aspire One 8.9" with it .. if not, then forget it. I won't support any manufacturer that intentionally changes its common-system interfaces (such as the battery pack) in order to squeeze a little more profit out.
That said, I'm very satisified with my AAO right now .. this would be a great upgrade for me in the coming months, though.
With the Intel GMA 500, Linux is a no-go for the moment. I tried to install Xubuntu on my Dell Mini 12 only to be greeted by a command prompt upon completion of the installation. When 'pwd' returned 'Desktop' I knew that something wasn't right. A bit of Googling showed that there is no Linux driver available for that card at the moment. It does OK under Vista (with all of the visual effects turned off) but I'm waiting with baited breath for a proper driver to be released.
Nope. Give me a full spec 13" laptop running Vista or Windows 7 for $500. Thanks.
interested!!!
I looking netbooks for girl friend
PC World Norway has reviewed a "preproduction" unit of the 11,6 inch Acer Aspire One D751h. I think that's the same unit as in the picture. It will be available in May, we've been told.
Here's a link to the review (in Norwegian): http://www.idg.no/pcworld/article127163.ece
And via Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=hp&hl=no&js=n&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.idg.no%2Fpcworld%2Farticle127163.ece&sl=no&tl=en

Wow, thanks klekanger. The google translation actually proves very servicable in this case.
This looks *very* interesting. Equivalent to those Sony 11" ultralights that they sell for $1500 and up, yet I expect it will be quite a bit cheaper. Course I'm still hoping its under $600.
This could definitely be a game changer. Industrial design looks very nice too.
Why put a GM500 in this product? Its limited to 1GB of RAM and pitiful h264 acceleration.
Come on guys. I have cash to spend, but nothing to spend it on.
Just saw one today at walmart... comes with 2gb ram... 250 gb hard drive... 8 hour battery life... best part of all... only cost $398 with vista pre intalled... awsome.... but the guy said he couldnt sell it to me for some reason??? wtf?
I bought this yesterday at Costco for $ 349.99. I was really looking for a notebook replacement so the the 11.6 inch screen was the most important factor for me - the screen on 10 inch netbooks is too small for me. That said, the form factor on this netbook is still great and 11.6" is not that big or heavy from a portability perspective. I also looked at the mini 12 and that seemed a bit larger i.e. almost not a netbook, which is puzzling because the usable screen size is not that different. Also, the mini 12 is $ 200 more which didn't make sense. I'd expect dell to further slash prices on the mini 12.
