The customers that try to wheel & deal tend not to understand that Best Buy isn't a car dealership - it is not a business with a high profit margin. The prices are generally determined by the market analysts in corporate. They know what price people will and won't buy something for.

No intelligent business is going to price match on an item that they don't have to. If they know the other store is out of stock, then that sale is no longer a threat to their business. The primary reason they have that clause that it's up the discretion of the employees is that sometimes there are ridiculous sales that aren't worth matching. A while back, a nearby Office Depot made some mistake in its orders for the week and ended up with a hundred too many flash drives (or something), so they were selling them at a 75% loss. Best Buy probably isn't going to match that - taking a $50 hit on an item that already has a rather low mark-up simply isn't worth it.

For my own, I know my Best Buy to be quite good about matching prices, and I've never had any trouble with them. A "corporate" store can run at a "loss" because the company demands franchise fees and rent up front...the owner's cut comes after paying out bills. (hint: the owner/operator of a McD makes his money selling Cheeseburgers, Ronald makes his money selling "McDonald's" to owner/operators.) If a corporate store "loses" money less than the franchise fees then it's still "making" the company money.

mabhatter

Comments on

I hope best buy goes down.. they are worse then even circuit city was...

Numus

Comments on

Man are you correct on that one.

I pride myself in being a smart shopper and I always had this funny feeling I was being shafted when trying to buy something at best buy.

So I began to make a note of all the things I found at other places (similar places) for cheaper:

Portable CD players: I bought 4 different players 2 different models. It depends on the best buy, some of them actually care about keeping customers and such and won't go against the policy just to begrudge people out of a bit more money. Other ones on the other hand will use anything(including outright lies) to prevent the pricematch from happening. One time a best buy MANAGER actually told me they wouldn't pricematch the G1($500 at best buy) with the t-mobile price($400) because it was an "online only price." This was obviously complete B.S. since there's nothing in the policy that says they won't match online prices(just online auction sites) AND the t-mobile store across the street had it for the exact same $400.

Mark

Comments on

I thought I read that they actually had a policy (emails rec'd) where they paid spiffs for keeping people from getting the price match.
