And as others have said, this will have no problem getting into the Store as it will be allowed over WiFi only. However, if you jailbreak you can get past that limitation and use it over 3G. But, it doesn't really make a difference in my opinion in terms of sticking it to AT&T. You are locked into a voice plan anyhow. If I could do data only, sure it would be excellent. I barely use my minutes and I have 4,000+ rollover.

It is nice for having a second number for your business however. With backgrounder and SkypeIn, your iPhone can have two numbers in, one for personal and one for business. That is what would excite me most if this app performs well.

I've used fring on my iPhone 2G for a while now, and the voice quality was almost as good as the cellular call quality. Only drawback was a slight (.5 seconds or so) delay in speech. I fail to see how this is an "Apple ecosystem thing" at all. The network usage restrictions come from at&t, and Apple doesn't have a VoIP system that this competes with. If Apple were planning on implementing an iPhone iChat with audio/video chat, then perhaps it would conflict. However, going through some ads today, I took a closer look at the fineprint of T-Mobile Germany's conditions, and according to the contract you're not allowed to use IM with T-Mobile. And this may not have anything to do with the topic, but they also cut down your speed to 64 KB/s for everything over 300MB.
