I put a lot of thought into this purchase decision and ruled out the laptop. The biggest reason is a laptop is tied to its keyboard. As such, when typing notes during a client interview a laptop would be between my clients and myself, partially blocking the view of each other. Whereas using this or any other more traditional computer, I can place the monitor to the side of my desk and maintain the clear view of my client. It sounds minor, but the non-verbal reaction was the reason I stopped using a laptop during client interviews, years ago.

The rest of the reasons go to the all-in-one slick design (and maybe a little bit of vanity). I have a table-style desk in my office and the computer tower and all the wires of my previous computer are huge distraction. Instead of wires running to and from my tower, monitor, printer, speakers, etc... everything is not contained in one unit with only a power and printer cord.

schaarschmidt

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

i'm confused why anyone would want a 'netbook' desktop? i can somehow understand people wanting very small form factor portables, but you could get way more value/performance by getting slightly older generation/bargain desktop parts.

justin

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

nVidia powered Ion nettops would make for a great base platform to build an HTPC. But I see the point about who would buy one for home use - buy a better desktop or a lappy. But as a stand-alone touchscreen with built in pc It's fantastic for exhibitions, events and even some commercial applications. To by a 15" touch with embedded PC commercially is more like £1000. So I suppose it's more a case of it fitting specific markets.

Timbo

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

Yeah i can see these going down a storm with a lick of embedded linux in buisnesses.

This warehouses, stock checking etc.

Oli D

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

I am surprised at how long it took for Engadget to post this. I have had my unit for two weeks. When I ordered it from Amazon (with free shipping), Newegg didn't have it listed. I purchased it for work where it gets used for word processing and Internet research. I am impressed with the slick all-in-one design.

Impressions:

Screen - The screen has a glossy coat on it which reflects the light a little. Not as bad as the screen on an HP laptop, but it is still there, barely. After a day of use I rarely noticed it. I have found that I am so accustom to using the key board and mouse that I really don't use the touch screen for much. The LED screen has a separate on/off switch so it can be shut of without shutting the whole computer down.

Keyboard - The keyboard looks slick and very clean. However, it lacks a number pad and the keys are flat. I recently purchased a wireless keyboard so I opted to use that instead of the wired keyboard that came with the computer.

Mouse - The mouse is slightly smaller than the average computer mouse. It has the feel of the type of mouse you might find on a mac. I like really liked the mouse, and if it was a wireless mouse I would still be using it. However, I had recently purchased a wireless mouse (with the wireless keyboard) and therefore have opted to use that instead.

Speakers - The sound quality is actually good, and better than expected, given the small size of the speakers.

Operating noise - This unit is silent. You cannot hear it unless you place your ear right next the vent at the top of the unit.

Programs - It comes with Easy Mode, Star Office, Opera and a few other programs pre-installed.

Easy Mode program - This is the program that runs ontop of windows. It contains the clock, notes, launch for programs, etc... Easy Mode does not detect and automatically add the programs once you install them. I not sure how to add icons, I didn't even look in the manual as I really didn't care for the Easy Mode program and disabled it in my start menu.

Overall - I really like the unit. Its all-in-one design is very slick and clean, eliminates the tower and a lot of wires. It meets my word processing and internet surfacing needs. I didn't test high graphic games or programs that would require a lot of memory, as I don't have those programs installed, nor do I intend to install them on this unit. For my needs it was worth the $599 price. I would have paid and extra $50-$75 for wireless keyboard and mouse.

schaarschmidt

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

I only tipped engadget, after seeing one of the local chinese computer shops having one on window display, and I know they get a lot of their stuff on newegg so when I got home I checked on the site and there it was

Jamil

Comments on ASUS 15.6-inch Eee Top all-in-one now shipping

Any more details on the screen quality?
