The PSP is a joke. The DS is pretty sweet, but old. "
What this guy says. I have both collecting dust for quite some time now. UMD really is a fail and the DS games might have been fun at times, yet they were usually missing something. I would say that the iPod Touch/iPhone actually were the handheld of 2008. I can't really recall anything where DS/PSP fans had something to be excited about (OK, maybe DSi announcement and tons of PSP2 rumours). But if you look at it, handheld gaming is kind of a joke. Usually people want to play games on the go when they are bored standing in line or in a car for a couple hours, which IMO, Apple has kinda nailed down. (I sit in a car a shit load of time and on the bus as well and can't imagine carrying my PSP or DS as well as all my other stuff).
Nintendo has now got the DSi, so they have some momentum again, but Sony really NEEDS to release something new if they want to have something in handhelds. Still, the best one would be a PSPhone. I mean we are in the times right now where we are used to have as much crap stuffed into one shell (ie iPhone or many other smartphones). If Sony would release a PSPhone without UMD, a touchscreen as well as normal controls (2 nipples! :p) then I will seriously consider buying it (if the games would be any fun of course.)

Patriks7

Comments on

The Apple Haters sure are voting now. There are plenty of great AAA games for PSP, and only a handful for the DS (and even those are mostly kiddy games or games made for the Nintendo faithful). And PSP can do so much more than DS (music, movies). iPod touch may be giving it a run for its money but it is much more expensive and memory and battery can't be replaced (long travel = fail), and the games just don't compare. I made a decision to not buy Touch until it costs CDN$300 for 32G - minimum reasonable space for my music collection. So far it hasn't happened so I am sticking to 80G Classic. And PSP for gaming when traveling. Totally deserved.
But desktop of the year? Display of the year? Storage device of the year? I have my doubts.

The iMac is (without a doubt) a great piece of kit, but its abject rejection of upgradeability frustrates me to no end.
The Apple Cinema Displays are stunning, to be sure, but I doubt very much that they're worth the price. Maybe "value" isn't the deciding factor, but it's hard for me to swallow that a monitor that costs almost twice as much as nearly-as-good monitors really deserves "Display of the Year, especially since that particular monitor has also declared DVI, mini-DVI, and micro-DVI obsolete in favor of its proprietary Mini DisplayPort.
And the Time Capsule is a good idea, but I think it's one that's just as well implemented by connecting any external hard drive (or collection of external HDs) to a wireless router. Again, I think Apple's bold-faced rejection of upgradeability ought to bother us consumers.

Hell. Sorry for the rant. I'm not saying anybody's wrong. I like Apple products, and I love OS X. But Apple's consistent choice of proprietary and non-upgradeable solutions over popular, established, and upgradeable standards isn't always as much in the customers' best interest as Apple would have us believe. I think choosing "brushed aluminum" in spite of those problems is probably the reason we Mac users get a reputation for being rich, computer-ignorant, hipster fops. Certainly one can hardly complain that the iPhone 3G, iPod touch, and unibody Macbook come home with well deserved rewards. But the iMac? Apple 24" display? Time Capsule? The argument that these products were the best in their categories is shaky at best, as evidenced by them making no showing in the editor's choices. At one point in the polling the Apple TV, one of the worst Apple devices in years, was even leading the Home Entertainment Device category.

I would also make a similar argument about the appearance of the Wii as Game Console of the year. The device has long since lost its luster for most people who own them, and the dearth of quality titles has gone beyond "worrisome" and is now in "ridiculous" territory. Both Sony and Microsoft made far more advances in '08. Not just in terms of content, but significant firmware improvements, hardware refreshes, and price cuts as well (none of which the Wii saw in '08).

A cult following does not qualify as evidence of a superior product.

Matt

Comments on

So basically you guys don't like the results because they don't fit into your preconceived notions about the devices selected. Can you honestly look at the results of the user awards and say that they were the result of people seriously voting on what they thought was the best product in that category for the year? Of course not. It's a bunch of 15 year-olds (or people with the mentality of 15 year-olds) extending some imagined brand war (in which expressing affinity for a product is viewed as equivalent to pledging loyalty to the manufacturer for life) into yet another space.

Yes Apple and Nintendo both have products that deserve recognition (notably the Wii Fit, iPhone 3G/iPod touch, and Macbook). You're right. Monitors are not all equal, and I'll back off from suggesting that the ACD's price is totally unreasonable. I'm no expert, by any means, but I do some minor visual art on my machine and even between my external Dell and my MacBook Pro's screen there's a palpable difference in the way the colors are reproduced.

Still, I doubt that it was the nuanced eye of graphic designers that pushed the ACD to "Display of the Year" status. Also, the same folks that're best qualified to appreciate the ACD's color-reproduction accuracy are pretty likely, I think, to hate the glossy-only aspect of the displays.

I don't know. It's price does reflect its quality. It is an awfully good monitor. And the isight and all are compelling features.
